Is Covenant Eyes worth it?

Hello all,
Code:
I was thinking recently about wether or not Covenant Eyes is truly an effective way of battling porn in this day and age, and want to get some other thoughts about it, especially as it pertains to iphone users.
My argument goes like this: If the goal of Covenant Eyes is to prohibit the online user from viewing sexually explicit material, then the program can not possibly claim to be 100% successful in such a task. While it is nearly a guarantee that one will not see such material while on the CE app, CE has no protection over, or at least a very limited watch, over other web browsers on the phone such as Safari or the Puffin App that users can still use to bypass the CE software and see explicit content.

My train of thought leads me to ask myself that if one can still access bad material without even the accountability software becoming activated, while still having the CE software…What’s the point in having Covenant Eyes? And also, wouldn’t it be better for those struggling from this addiction to grow in purity while still potentially having access to such material and thus saying “No” rather than the opposite that consists of them wanting to see x-rated film, but simply not having the means of doing so?

Any thoughts appreciated!

The internet is fairly close to the point where I can let my children google safe subjects and not end up on a porn site.

By this logic, alcoholics should set out a bottle of booze on their counter so they can say “no” to it.

Not very sound reasoning.

Being in the near-occasion of sin isn’t a positive thing for us to build self-control

Without some filters, for many a computer connected to the internet is a near occasion to sin. However, there are effective ways of reducing and/or eliminating those issues. Not sure where you were going with your response?

Not all people who have a problem with masturbation use pornography.
In fact a lot of men don’t and simply have fantasies looking at girls they may know etc.
It may work both ways but I’m not a girl and don’t really discuss that with women.

Covenant Eyes is specifically to help people with porn addictions.
It does not purport to help everybody out there who might masturbate. People can get in the mood to masturbate from many sources, including just thinking about their spouse.
However, porn addiction is a real problem for many, and that is the issue that Covenant Eyes was designed to address.

This is true.
But wouldn’t you agree that porn addiction and addiction to masturbation are linked? What I mean is most people who struggle with one struggle with the other. However I do agree that not all people who struggle with impurity are addicted to porn but many times it is the case. But I think both addictions have a much deeper seated issue that needs to be addressed. I think addiction to impure things are sinful however there is usually a deep seated issue that needs to be addressed either with a counselor or a spiritual advisor. Going to confession helps but you need to go to figure out the root before one can overcome it. I know this because I use to have a real issue with impurity.
In fact I’m not sure how grave the sin is for people who have an addiction to it because it is probably stemming from some emotional disorder or self esteem problems which may minimize culpability.

Porn addiction is a serious problem.
Porn addiction is linked to masturbation, yes.

However, this thread is not about preventing masturbation generally. We have already had about 124724 threads on masturbation generally, so technically, you’re getting a bit off topic here. It’s best to stick to the topic in order to make sure you don’t violate the forum TOS.

This thread is specifically about Covenant Eyes blocking the view of porn for someone with porn addiction. Obviously, if someone is inspired to masturbate by things that aren’t porn, then they will not be looking at getting Covenant Eyes, because they won’t need it. Likewise, I don’t think anybody is foolish enough to think that if you have a sexual addiction, just installing Covenant Eyes is going to fix all your problems.

Like I said, this is off topic, so this is all I’ll say on the matter.

As @MarysLurker wrote in Post #3, you need to use Covenant Eyes and use other restrictions that are available on the device.

For this to work, you also need the help of a trusted friend or spouse who alone knows the password needed to unlock the security. That should prevent the user from intentionally defeating the security in a moment of weakness.

It’s important to bear in mind that we do have weak moments.

Even if you’re fairly virtuous, “Just Say No” only works about 90 percent of the time. (Your mileage may vary.) The remaining 10 percent, all your good intentions crash and burn. Those are the times that you could use a little help. And if you manage to escape the temptation with such help, you put a little more distance between yourself and the sin, which is better than falling back into it and having to climb all the way back out.

Definitely worth it, yes. Shell out the cash. Get accountability and filtering. Removing as much of that temptation as you can, for less than $20/mo, is definitely worth it.
