I am a Catholic slowly trying to regain my faith. Over the past several years various issues (health, emotional, etc) have arisen that have shaken my faith – and my own blatant stubbornness is prohibiting me from “getting over it” and regaining the faith I once had. It’s not that I don’t want to become faithful again, I (unfortunately) don’t know enough about my own religion and feel somewhat dishonorable in saying I have faith. (Although I still do attend mass weekly).
Anyway, my boyfriend (recently started dating about 2 months ago) is a Protestant. He is very much open to discussing his beliefs where I am more hesitant (mostly because I don’t know enough) and he is very into praise and worship events. One such event, where he currently is this week, is called Creation Festival (creationfest.com/). It is an annual event where individuals come to sing “today’s” worship music and camp for the week, along with a variety of activites.
From my own personal background, I am accustomed to old-fashioned, traditional organ music at mass. I have never really been one for a rock and roll type / hands swaying in the air worship band, it seems to lose its sanctity. Therefore, I turned down the opportunity to go with my boyfriend.
I think part of the issue may be that I’m worried this would explain more about my faith / restore it moreso than my church has – but I don’t want to lose my religion as a Catholic. However, it’s my own fault I don’t know enough about Catholicism to defend it when necessary.
Therefore, I’m searching for an explanation of the views of the Catholic church on events such as Creation. I realize all denominations are encouraged to worship together … but they don’t believe in saints (etc) and events like that have always felt very awkward to me. Any thoughts?
