I’ve been asked to support my daughter, who is going on a walk for them. It’s supposed to be for food for the poor, but so many places that sound good are supporting abortion that I"m getting paranoid. Anybody know for sure?

Hello Katy,

I tried to search on www.charitynavigator.org. I got mixed results. It appears several charities use this acronymn.

charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?keyword_list=crop&bay=search.results

If you are unsure of the nature of this group, it is better to donate a few canned goods to the local pantry, donate a little at mass, and stay home with your daughter. I recommend watching the movie Bella if she is over 14. It might be available at your library and free to check out.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the link. This is a grown daughter who has left the Church and become a Protestant. This pains me greatly, but I’d like to keep lines of good will open. If she is doing something that truly helps the poor, maybe I can join in the effort. If it’s another front for abortion, forget it. I doubt that she’d know one way or another.

Following the link that rskempf provided I believe Church World Service is the group that is holding the walk. This group sponsors CROP Walks to raise money. When I belonged to the United Methodist Church our church along with the local interfaith group participated. They’ve done it for years. I’m not sure how to find where exactly all of their money goes but this group seems mainly concerned with eradicating hunger. In my opinion they seem to be a good group and worthy of support.

if you search the archives of the national catholic register (NOT reporter) on their website under crop walk you will get several hits on remarks of various bishops who have investigated the organization (I forget the name, PP is probably right) and asked their parishes and youth groups not to participate. supposedly some of the money raised goes to fund projects here and overseas which not only directly provide food, job training etc. and other assistance to women and families, but allegedly some projects which provide medical care also provide ABC including abortion or referrals for those services. That seems to be the objection, in any case my pastor followed up on this so after several years participation in crop walk, we no longer participate, Instead the teens help with the various other local and parish hunger projects.

Thanks. I believe it is CWS. At least some Orthodox are participating also, but I don’t know how firmly, or if, they oppose abortion. It looks as tho I may be able to join with her on this one, I hope.
