I’m not sure if cursing is sinful in the Bible or in the Catholic tradition?

I believe it’s a venial sin. And if it’s not, it’s not something you should feel free to go about doing. We are called to be Christlike, and if Jesus didn’t go about cursing, neither should we.

The Jewish people do not ever say the name of God so that they do not break the commandment, do not take the Lord’s name in vain.

By cursing, are you talking about calling upon God to do something bad to someone?

Cursing someone or something is a sin. I’m pretty sure this means wishing evil on them or wanting them to go to hell, or trying to get them to go to hell.

If by cursing you mean invoking God’s name in vain then its a grave sin and mortal if the usual conditions are applicable.

Foul language is also sinful as per scripture such as Ephesians 4:29 and Luke 6:45.

Also James 3:9-12:
With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way. Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water? Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.

Jesus as in cursing the fig tree. … the OP certainly needs to clarify what the meaning of cursing is here.

I’m not coy, and it’s common on the forums to ask if curses or cursing is real. Blasphemy is sinful. Intent is key. Nothing makes a word sinful except intent. I personally dont find common “swear words” sinful.

Depending on the curse, words, the circumstances, the intent and the degree of malice involved, cursing could be venial, grave or not a sin at all.

i am no theologian, but I think there is a spectrum here from letting out an expletive in shock or frustration or using a bad word without thinking, making an off-color joke, getting nasty with someone in an argument, and calling down curses upon someone’s first born child out of a thirst for vengeance.

I think that is perfectly logical.
The “s” word is not sinful in and of itself. I use it all the time. Calling another person that is disrespectful and dehumanizing and that intent can be sinful.

I hope not. I curse like a truck driver. Because I am a truck driver. 😉

The way I think of it is this - Jesus is The WORD. We use our tongue to praise God, to give thanks to God, to worship God in speech.
Our speech should be uplifting, not* (edited to change typo from now to not) tearing down.
I’m going to assume cursing is along the lines of swearing/foul language and not wishing evil upon another.
If said in surprise e.g. stubbed toe and in pain - therefore not intended or premeditated, I would think is no sin.
I found this article here on CA Am I really not allowed to curse or swear? I especially like the Bible quotes - Colossians 3:8 and James 3:10

Putting a curse on people = sinful

Saying “D^%$ it” = crass, but not sinful unless you do it purposely to offend God or other people.

Cursing
Beginning at 3rd paragraph:-
“Curses which imply rebellion against Divine Providence, or denial of His goodness or other attributes, such as curses of the weather, the winds, the world, the Christian Faith, are not generally grievous sins, because the full content and implication of such expressions is seldom realized by those who use them. The common imprecations against animate or inanimate objects which cause vexation or pain, those against enterprises which fail of success, so, too, the imprecations that spring from impatience, little outbreaks of anger over petty annoyances, and those spoken lightly, inconsiderately, under sudden impulse or in joke, are, as a rule, only venial sins — the evil being slight and not seriously desired.”
