Is cussing always bad?

I think the question here is why. I don’t really understand why saying “oh sugar” isn’t an affront to human dignity, but saying the actual word is.

wisdom 1:7 Because the spirit of the Lord has filled the world,
and that which holds all things together knows what is said,
8 therefore those who utter unrighteous things will not escape notice,
and justice, when it punishes, will not pass them by.
9 For inquiry will be made into the counsels of the ungodly,
and a report of their words will come to the Lord,
to convict them of their lawless deeds;
10 because a jealous ear hears all things,
and the sound of grumbling does not go unheard.
11 Beware then of useless grumbling,
and keep your tongue from slander;
because no secret word is without result,
and a lying mouth destroys the soul.

Sirach 21:27 When an ungodly person curses an adversary, he curses himself.

Sirach 28:13 Curse the gossips and the double-tongued, for they destroy the peace of many.

Sirach 34:29 When one prays and another curses, to whose voice will the Lord listen?

Saying ‘poop’ is okay, but not ‘sh*t’…

double standards are odd

So Adam, would you speak that way to your wife? Would you be okay with other people talking that way around her?

Too many people acting like its no big deal.
It’s a different culture. We just don’t view cursing as the social “mortal sin” that the Yanks do.

It might not be the most polite habit but it’s also not that big a deal. It depends on your relationship to co-workers/friends. The better you know someone the more likely they are to curse in your company.

Hmm. I thought it was a sin to blaspheme.

It’s not polite to use foul language, it’s not a nice idea to use it in front of kids or to insult someone with foul language. My mother has Alzheimer’s and, oddly, the words she remembers are bad words. Often directed at her nurses. 😖

I don’t think it’s always a sin. It’s more of a bad habit.

The Spongebob episode with the bad word is my and my children’s favorite.

My son has a brain injury, and there was a period of time where he was pretty salty. 😳 it bothered him a great deal too, because he couldn’t control it.

I learned that the brain categorizes “bad words” separately from regular language. That’s why people with Tourette’s use bad language during their outbursts, or people in general use it when angered but not normally.

Would you speak to your wife that way? Would you like her to speak to you that way?

Just because everyone does it doesn’t make it right.
