Is daily mass this Thursday, Ascension?

Or is the feast day pushed out to Sunday? I am an Eastern Catholic with no parish within 6 hours, I think my only choice is the Greek Orthodox, who celebrate the feast day this Thursday.

…The 40th day after Easter Sunday is always a Thursday, and the feast has traditionally been celebrated on that Thursday. However, because attendance at Ascension Thursday Masses had been falling for years, the bishops of the United States, in accordance with canon law, petitioned the Vatican to allow the celebration to be transferred to the following Sunday.

Today, only the ecclesiastical provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Philadelphia, and Omaha (the state of Nebraska) continue to celebrate the Ascension of Our Lord on Thursday. The faithful in those provinces (an ecclesiastical province is basically one large archdiocese and the dioceses that are historically associated with it) are required, under the Precepts of the Church, to attend Mass on Ascension Thursday.

Celebrating Ascension on Sunday

In the rest of the dioceses of the United States, the celebration of the Ascension has been transferred to the following Sunday (the 43rd day after Easter).

The readings for Daily Mass on this Thursday will vary depending on whether Ascension Thursday is being celebrated. See both readings for Thursday at the US Catholic Conference website:

Of course, if you have an Eastern Catholic parish, or an FSSP parish nearby, they may well celebrate the traditional Ascension Thursday Mass.

Yep. The province I am in permanently transferred Ascension Thursday to the following Sunday 9 or 10 years ago.

I believe the only US provinces that still celebrate the Ascension 40 (rather than 43) days after Easter Sunday are Boston, New York, Philidelphia, Omaha, and one other (can’t remember which one, but back east somewhere). I think, but can’t guarantee that includes all the associated suffragan dioceses also (i.e. May 25th is a Holyday of Obligation in both the Archdiocese of Boston and the Diocese of Fall River).

I’m in the UK and although it’s been transferred to Sunday here, any Priest may also decide to celebrate it on Thursday so long as that service is at 6pm or later and is done in the Extraordinary Form. That’s what my parish Priest is doing, even though he doesn’t regularly use the EF. I’ll go to another church that always uses Latin High Mass on holy days of obligation though, since I already made plans.

Here in the United States, its an ordinary work day, banks, offices, schools are all open- I guess with the exception of Catholic institutions. Although Duquesne is in between sessions right now and its immaterial to them.

Here in Denver, the feast day is transferred to Sunday.

My son’s confirmation is this Thursday, however, and I think that is The Most Beautiful “coincidence” for him – that he will be able to remember that his confirmation was Ascension Thursday! (regardless of what readings will be used)

Denver, Colorado Spring, Pueblo and Cheyenne are all in the same province so my pastor has been saying all week at mass that “Thursday is NOT a Holy Day and we will NOT be celebrating the Ascension as it’s been transferred PERMANENTLY to the following Sunday, so please don’t tell me we used the wrong readings.” He said he will still have people that have attended daily for years that will ask why he didn’t use the right readings.

Gertabelle, congratulations on your son’s upcoming confirmation. Two of my kids were confirmed by Bishop Rodríguez in February. I hope it makes a lasting impression on him (and not just ontologically either ).

In Norway, Ascension Thursday is a holiday where everything is closed, just like a Sunday. Many Norwegians take a day off the next day for a long weekend.

Our Archdiocese also moved it to Sunday. However, our FSSP parish will celebrate the “External” Feast of the Ascension on Thursday evening at 7:00pm with a sung High Mass.

If you live where there is a Maronite jurisdiction (such as Eparchy of Our Lady of Lebanon in the USA or Eparchy of Saint Maron of Montreal in Canada), then simply attend any Catholic Mass or Divine Liturgy (Latin or eastern Catholic) from Wednesday evening through Thursday midnight in fulfillment of the obligation to celebrate. Orthodox is not in communion so does not fulfill the obligation.

Mostly the northeastern United States is the only dioceses where it’s still a Holy Day of Obligation. Which always kind of irritated me conforming like that. The Ascension is 40 days after Easter. Not the seventh Sunday. Pentecost just always falls on a Sunday. The Epiphany has been moved to the Sunday between January 2nd and 8th in all of America. That one annoys me too it’s the 12th day of Christmas it should be on January 6th like it traditionally is.
