Is dancing a sin?

I recently had the desire to take up swing dancing. There’s dances held in my area every other week for college students, and from what I’ve heard, they seem to be a lot of fun.

However, I was told my my friend (who is Christian, but not Catholic) that swing dancing and dancing in general is displeasing to God. She stated all the dancing references in the Bible are about dancing to glorify and worship God and swing dancing does neither.

I’ve never really thought about this before so I thought it was an interesting question… Is swing dancing displeasing to God?

If an action is not sinful in itself, it can be done for the glory of God. Dancing is not sinful in itself; so it can be done for the glory of God. There are fundamentalist Protestants who see dancing and the drinking of alcohol–even the wearing of make up as seriously sinful. But the Catholic Church has never seen these things as evil in themselves.
