Is defending yourself verbally a sin? Why or why not?

Pride. I do not see how allowing someone to humiliate you is a sign of humility. Why would saying something back be pride? I’m not talking about seeking revenge, I think that is wrong.

Mother Teresa, people still make a living saying ugly things about her.

Jesus told us to rejoice when men say all manner of evil against us. Christianity is the narrow path.
 
We can defend ourselves verbally without insulting the other person or seeking revenge.

You have given the example of Jesus carrying His cross without defending Himself, which is true. But when His time was not there yet He did defend His teachings against the pharisees who did not understand Him and tried to undermine Him.
 
It’s as invasive as the common cold. It is a frequent test or trial for just about everybody. Yes, as Christians we are called on to turn the other cheek, at the same time there is fraternal correction. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, lots of factors involved. I am better about such things now. I try to get my point across with humor mostly. An example.

"Can you not do this and that at the same time?
“Well I can sure try and afterwards, maybe I can press your shirts!”

To be sure, I have included many of these exchanges in confession, but I am happy to report there is progress. Really, it is a measure of where I am at that time spiritually. It’s a good barometer. I have even thanked God for the experience at times for the much needed humility. That is how the saints do it and ultimately they, the Saints, and our Lord is who we or at least I, am TRYING to emulate.

Yes that is true. I think it is important to make a distinction between what the person is defending and the particular circumstance.

Defending the Truth is always a good thing. Defending yourself in an argument without much weight on an unimportant matter…not as humble.
 
I would say, if your livelihood is on the line and people are accusing you falsely of things that could get you fired, you MUST stand up for yourself
