I have another thread regarding lying and adultery as I was surprised that many Catholics on here were advising a person to decieve/lie by omission to their husband (that they had cheated on) and not tell him.
Some people felt it was ok to be deceptive this way so the innocent spouse wouldn’t be hurt.
Personally I would never want a husband to deceive me regarding being unfaithful and would consider it more hurtful to not just cheat but also be deceptive about it.
So,it’s come to my attention that theres a subjective component to the scripture passage “do unto others as you would want done to you”…
How can a consensus be reached about what to “not do unto others” objectively if people “want” certain things?
Ie:I wouldn’t be deceptive to a husband about cheating because I wouldn’t want them to be deceptive to me (of course wouldn’t cheat either!) but “person B” might think “I wouldn’t tell my husband about my cheating because I wouldn’t want them to tell me because I’d be hurt and I’d rather deny reality”.
So how can we always do unto others if not everybody has the same “text book definition”?
I hope that makes sense!
