Is downloading media when there is no law against it moral?

I know this issue has been thrashed to death before, but is it moral to download a movie or song from the internet, essentially obtain this media for free, moral even when there is no law against it, aka in Canada where I live? I’m taking about media that one could go purchase or rent if one wanted to. In other words, do you have to pay money for something that you can obtain for free if there are no laws against it? Is it moral if the people who created the media are NOT loosing money because you obtained it for free? Is it moral if they DO loose money?
Thanks very much, this issue has bothered me for a very long time.
