Is drinking a mortal sin?

Or to a Catholic Mass! I just got back from mass and people were drinking alcohol there!.

On the serious side it would be a mortal sin for me to drink. That’s because I know I’m an alchoholic and I know what it does to me if I do drink.

That’s the teaching I had growing up… Don’t agree either.

Back to the OP…

As others have posted… as long as it’s within moderation you’re fine. If you do drink, stop before you start feeling the “buzz/high” or it’ll lead you right into mortal sin.

What if it sneaks up on you and it’s too late?

It is a mortal sin to drink until you are drunk. The sin is called intemperance. If someone’s speech is slurred he is drunk. If good judgment is impaired he is drunk.

Well, that only happens if you don’t know your limit or know what you’re drinking.

If you have no control over what you’re drinking (like if you’re forced, not peer-pressured, or the drink is spiked) then it’s a venial sin at the most.

Still… drunkedness creeping up on you is normally a result of drinking too much, not knowing your limits (which you should start out small at first if you plan on drinking, although abstinence is good), and giving into peer pressure.

With ancestry of 1/2 Italian and 1/2 Irish…I never thought that drinking was a mortal sin. Only my Baptist grandmother thought so. She would attend Catholic wedding ceremonies…but she would skip the reception. She did attend my parents reception in 1956…but left early on. She attended my cousins wedding cermony in '79…when she married a Catholic…but skipped the reception at the Hibernian Society Hall.

She missed a great reception… I remember most of it. 😃

Peer pressure?

Not even an issue here. I will have to ask a priest but I hardly believe getting a lttle tipsy at a party by accident can even be considered a mortal sin.

Nevertheless, if it’s accidental, then learn why it happened, and correct it.

I am delighted to have recently found out that I’m Irish.

My parents were immigrants from England. Some English rellies were visiting in July for my dad’s funeral. I asked my cuz if he knew our family history…to know how we ended up English and Catholic. Because it was illegal for centuries, doncha know! So were we Recusants? Or Oxford movement converts? Or what?

He said several gens back we came over from Ireland! My last name is common in County Clare!

I was delighted. I feel funnier already. I’ve been telling jokes and tales more. And singing Lord of the Dance. And I really must start drinking more. :irish3:

Maybe it is even good to drink a little but better never try it. If not to know what it is there will be no desire to drink, no alcohol-associated risks etc. Have anyone ever been really thirsty? Then, remember how good water felt? Learn to value simple things!
 
That reminds me, I have lots of leftover beer from the Label Day Q. 😃
 
I haven’t had a chance to read all the replies yet but I got a problem with what I’ve read so far.

So drinking alone constitutes mortal sin??? hogwash! I highly highly doubt I’m gonna spend an eternity in hell just because I like to have a drink or two in private while listening to my stereo and thinking about life.

Drinking until speech is slurred constitutes mortal sin???

Sorry guys Im really really trying not to be rude right now but I DONT believe this teaching at all. Drinking doesnt’ bother my conscience, that’s why I was so surprised that some catholic ppl list it as a mortal sin.

So let me get this straight, some guy who has a couple beers on a friday night is doomed the same fate as adolf hitler, rapists and murderers???

Well I agree with you, but it’s not our place to decide that whether rapists, murderers, or yes, even Hitler is/are in hell…:rolleyes:
