Is drunkenness acceptable in certain circumstances?

Yes but you’ll have to define drunkenness.

God gave us alcohol for our enjoyment. Feeling the alcohol is the whole point. You can drink a pretty good amount without being drunk - that is, all sloppy all-over-the-place confused etc. You shouldn’t get “buzzed” every day or anything, but in a social gathering I think it’s totally appropriate, even beneficial. I don’t see anything wrong with having one or two beers every evening, it’s actually healthy (good for the heart in particular).
There is nothing wrong with taking a drink in order to relax and enjoy your leisure.

**
Sin commences when judgment is impaired by drinking.** So, what is the advantage of impairment? There is none. Tongues loosen, morals evaporate. To willfully drink until judgment is impaired is a grave sin and is called drunkenness and these persons do not inherit the kingdom of God unless they confess and repent before death. (Galatians 5:19-21)

James 3:6
And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

Proverbs 20:1
Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise.

I’d say as soon as you start to say things you normally would not say, then you have a problem and you went over the line.
Most of the sexual promiscuity in my country is intimately linked to drunkeness, or if you will, being inebriated.
People start flirting, kissing and even having sex, some get violent, some say hurtful or perverse things, some walk through the cold night singing drinking songs full of dirty words…
You hardly know you’ve had too much until you are there. I’d say drinking more than 1 or 2 beers is inviting the near occasion of sin.
As for me I got inebriated with 1,5 glas of wine a few years ago. I knew I was taking a risk when I started on the second glass. Then I lost my normal inner limits, started saying alot of nonsense, letting all my feelings out and kissed a guy I should’ve never kissed. I put my self in harms way, and I put the other person in harms way because of my idiotic and immature behaviour.

As for men, I think men are gross when they have had so much alchohol that they get over-social and over-funny. They may feel like they “the man” and having a good and innocent time, but they loose respect in the eye of women and children who may happen to be around. I always feel that even mild drunkeness is like full blown immodesty.
