I live in a uni residence. After coming out of the bathroom, I found some floormates standing around while my neighbour (“T”) and his girlfriend (“E”) entered his room together. Everyone looked very serious, and I got curious and asked my other neighbour what happened. He said that T and E had broken up over the weekend and I assumed that they were going to talk about it privately. Well after the crowd dispersed, I got concerned and curious because T and E are are good friends of mine and I wouldn’t want them to be on bad terms, so I ended up listening at the door to their conversation. I didn’t catch much before another floormate turned the corner and saw me, and I got embarassed and stopped. Now I’m worried that I committed a sin and if I confess to T and E they’ll think less of me and won’t want to be friends anymore.

I don’t know if it’s a sin, per se, but it’s rude and inconsiderate and you shouldn’t have done it. Imagine how you’d feel if someone was listening in to a highly personal conversation you clearly meant to stay private.

BoomBoom is right. I don’t know about a sin, but the conversation was none of your business and you had no right to eavesdrop. I don’t know how you listening in to their private conversation would put them on any better terms, either. Don’t do it again.

Eves droppers never hear good about themselves is an old saying.

It’s not nice to evesdrop and no good comes of it…I believe.

I wouldn’t tell them, but not for that reason. I wouldn’t tell them because it’s likely to upset and embarrass them.
I would, however, certainly include it in your next confession. The problem isn’t that your friends might think less of you. The problem.is that you had absolutely no right to listen to their private conversation.

When I said that they wouldn’t want to be friends anymore, I meant being friends with me. I wasn’t under any pretenses that I could somehow save their relationship by invading their privacy; I just thought that I ought to ask forgiveness from them for eavesdropping. In hindsight I think I eavesdropped out of a base desire for private knowledge, not out of any real concern for my friends.

I could see it falling under the category of detraction or gossip, evenif you didn’t tell anyone else what you heard, you had no business with their personal information. and something doen’st necessarily need to be classified to be a sin for it to be not right to do. if you want to know something about your friends, you should just ask them

Lol thanks for telling me, I replied using email and I have an automatic signature line for outlook.

Usually I say that if you have to be sneaky about an action, there’s at least a chance that it’s sinful. I’d say in your case, it’s venial at worst and innocuous at best.

The more practical question is . . . when you eavesdropped on your friends, precisely what are you going to do with the information? Keep them together somehow?

If the matter is something you can’t control, it’s safe to say that your nose is where it doesn’t belong.

It sounds like you had a good intention but it wasnt a good action if that makes sense. the fact that you felt guilty when caught is a good indicator as to whether it’s a sin or not… I’d say it is possibly a venial sin or at least slippery slope behaviour (as I call it) meaning something that will lead to sin. For myself I think if I wouldn’t like someone to do it to me then I confess it, though I often leave those little things to the end and tell the priest I dont know if they are sins and then go ahead. I think it’s not the acts themselves so much but the roots underneath ie why did you do it… only you can truly know with a prayerful examen. Not by telling us at that’s likely to hide something… you sounded like you had a good motive wanting to help friends but probably under that there is more to it… maybe curiosity, fear of losing one or the other, pride etc. God bless . I agree you dont need to tell your friends, just your priest.
