cynic:
Gal 5: 17
“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other…”
?
The key word there is “lusteth.” This passage is speaking against a disordered desire. This is backed up by the rest of the passage,
5:19-21 “Now the works of the flesh are obvious: immorality, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions, occasions of envy, drinking bouts, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
Where on earth would eating ice cream fall in there?
I would instead point you to the true dignity of the flesh:
Jn. 1:1-5,10-14
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him. But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision but of God.
And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.”
and…
Gen. 1:26-28
"Then God said: “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the cattle, and over all the wild animals and all the creatures that crawl on the ground.” God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them, saying: “Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the earth.”
You see, the flesh preexists the fall. The flesh came before the fall. If the flesh existed in paradise, it could not possibly be evil in and of itself. That would somehow make God evil. No, God is not evil, nor is the flesh. God created the flesh and the flesh has so much dignity that God himself entered into the flesh.
So what does that mean for our current debate? Something that satisfies the flesh in a nondisordered way is not in itself evil. It is only from the heart that evil comes. If you make the pleasure associated with food your idol, you are committing evil. If you appreciate in a nondisordered way the pleasure God has associated with food, you are not committing evil. Remember, evil comes from within, not from without.
Mt. 15:17-20 “Do you not realize that everything that enters the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled into the latrine? But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile. For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, unchastity, theft, false witness, blasphemy. These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile.”
