I was taught that abortion meant excommunication and said excommunication was permanent. Now, I’m reading that an abortion can be forgiven by a bishop of the diocese or if he allows, by priests in the diocese or, in another reading, by simply going to confession.
What is the correct answer please??

There is no such thing as a permanent excommunication. The purpose of excommunication is to alert the sinner that his/her actions are gravely wrong and need to be corrected. Excommunications always have a way to be lifted or conditions that can lead to it being lifted.

In the case of abortion, most bishops have granted permission for priests to lift the excommunication in the sacrament of confession.
