Can a Catholic travel extensively knowing that Sunday Mass would sometimes be missed? An example: My son would like to hike the Continental Divide Trail, which is over three thousand miles and would take about five months. I t would be nearly impossible to make it to Mass every Sunday. Does the Church permit this?

Travel is indeed a valid reason for missing Mass. So long as your son goes to Mass on Sunday whenever it is reasonably possible for him to do so, he has just cause for missing Mass on those Sundays when he cannot attend a church due to travel conditions. Indeed, if he were traveling exclusively in an area where attending Mass is impossible, he would be excused from the holy day obligation for his entire trip.
