Why is this thread continuing?
Everyone has told the OP that killing ants is not a sin.
End of story. End of thread.

Because like so many threads, it has veered slightly and taken on a life of its own. NBD! 🤷

Something killed a wasp in my house yesterday. I think my cat did it. I found her batting something across the kitchen floor and found it was a half dead wasp. My dog was watching amusingly. Neither show any signs of being stung.

Hi, Catholic90,

I am inclined to think that neither your murderous cat or amused dog have shown any signs of remorse over this obviously hostile act… 😃

Now, getting animals to develop sense of guilt will require a lot more treats than in getting them to ‘sit’ and ‘roll over’… but, maybe it can be done! While I am not sure we can get domesticated animals to reframe from killing other life forms - but, it certainly opens up a new dimension on this topic…

God bless

Like Thistle, I have been wondering why this thread keeps on its endless spin … but, I guess Catholic 90, you’re right - it has taken on a life of its own… and considering our developing sense of creative writing … well … I guess we will just spin on… :whacky:

Hi, The 5th Commandment tells us not to ‘kill’ but it would be best understood as not to murder - and that would be the unjustified taking of another human life.
CatholicBoy posted some of the quotes from the Catechism on respecting animals. Note that this comes under the discussion of the Seventh Commandment (“Thou shall not steal”), not the Fifth Commandment (“Thou shall not kill”). You are right that the 5th Commandment is speaking about human life.

We respect the lives of animals because they are part of creation and we are called to be good stewards of creation so as not to “steal” those resources from future generations.

Hi, Joe5859,

Maybe I misunderstood the issue here.

The OP was wondering about killing ants being sinful. Many have responded that it is not a sin. I really do not recall any poster identifying that the Catholic Church has identified that exterminating insects or animals that pose a threat to human life as sinful. As posts progressed, a more ligh-hearted approach developed. Actually, my underestanding is that this is about as far as things went. Maybe you have some additional insights in this matter?

Additonally, and, I think this is new material, animals serve as a valuable resource on testing the safety of medications designed for the welfare of humans.

Those engaged in the torture of animals or insects have profound psychological problems and are probably guilty of sin. I guess this would be a solid example of not respecting animals.

God bless

Tom,

I wasn’t trying to bring seriousness to a light-hearted discussion. 😛 Perhaps my post was a non-sequitur. I wasn’t trying to imply that exterminating ants was a sin. I don’t think it is.

I was just bringing up what I think is a helpful point. Our consideration of animal life is in an altogether different category than our consideration of human life. It’s a difference in kind, not just degree.

Maybe I’m the only one who finds it interesting, though. :o
