Is failure to examine conscience a mortal sin?

Yes, I can be guilty of the sin of scrupulosity. Even so, I went to confession, yesterday, and confessed all the sins I thought of at the time, except for one that I considered venial, but wasn’t sure. I know that intentionally withholding a MORTAL sin invalidates the ENTIRE confession, but this is what I didn’t mention: I failed to go to a webpage that lists an examination of conscience of potential mortal sins, before going to the confession. So, while I didn’t consciously withhold any knowingly mortal sins, I may not have done as thorough of an examination of conscience as I could have. Is this in itself a mortal sin, and do I have to reconfess all the other sins I confessed yesterday, or am I being ridiculously scrupulous, and probably in need of confessing the scrupulosity part? Thank you.

You’re fine. A little scrupulous, yes, but fine. If AT THAT TIME you were unaware of any mortal sin then your confession is valid and you are forgiven. If you NOW believe that what you did was a mortal sin (highly unlikely since your lack of knowledge is obvious) then just confess that sin the next time you go. Enjoy the mercy of God and live in His love. He’s not out there to hope that you fail. Quite the contrary…God Bless…teachccd 🙂
 
If you go to confession as often as you should (once a month is recommended- I’d say that is a MINIMUM), you don’t need to do much examining to remember your mortal sins. Just take a few minutes to think about each commandment and each precept of the church and whether or not you did anything that is a grave violation of those.
 
If scrupulosity is a sin, us scrupulous folks might start being scrupulous about being scrupulous…
I have never thought of scrupulosity as a sin per se. I have mentioned things at confession like too much fear, too little trust… just ^because they don’t feel right and are things I want to work on.

scrupulosity is no more a sin than measles. It might lead to sin, but it is not. IMHO
