I will like to know if it is wrong to download music from the internet free of charge(in other words illegal download).Someone would say that I don’t need to be asking this question but the reason why I’m asking is,if this sites are really illegal why are they allowed to run in the first place?I mean for me to download from such sites could I have sinned?

It is wrong because it deprives the artist of the proper revenue for his product. There are several sites for legal downloading at 99 cents a song. This should not be a burden as 45 rpm records had hit a high price of $2.50.

Well, I am going to be really honest with you. I do this. As a big music fan I also purchase on average 2 CD’s a month, more if I can afford it. Most of the songs I download I also end up buying once I have the money.

I take heart from the fact that having watched interviews with the bands whose music I have downloaded they have said ‘if you can find the music online, good on yer, do it.’ There are some artists of course who are really concerned about this, others will admit they have enough money and this is not a problem for them which I actually think is a very generous stance to take.

As a rule of thumb, I continue to do this but only one song at a time and if I particularly enjoy a band or a song I will then go out and buy their stuff. Kind of like ‘try before you buy.’ Not strictly legal but hardly the crime of the century either.

Everything on the internet is not legal. Child pornography can be found on the web but downloading from those sites is illegal. So you must discern what is right and what is wrong. If most sites sell songs then there is a reason for it. Searching until you find one where you can get songs for free is just like searching for someone here to tell you that it’s not a sin. Both would be wrong…God Bless…teachccd:)

So then, I understand you to say that it’s o.k. to take from everyone since a few have proclaimed that their wealth no longer necessitates an income. It may be a “generous” stance for the individual but, by initiating such an activity, many who may not be so fortunate will suffer. One last question: To that particular artist who posed that generous stance, can I walk into Target and steal his CD?? No difference. Remember, he’s rich…teachccd:)

Oh please…

I think you might be thinking of the Peer Sharing programs that run on your computer, like Imesh or Limewire. They are allowed to oporate because they ask you to “upgrade” to the Pro version, and I would suggest doing it. By doing this you are Paying for your downloads, simple as that. If noone ever does this then they wouldn’t be able to have the smaller version for free. The buy version has faster downloads and more search options and more serches. You haev access to a larger network of “peers” to file share with. Imesh is paid for by the Advertisers that pop up when it is running. So it isn’t always free, because someone is paying for it, just maybe not you.

Those were your words…😉
Actually, no they weren’t and hence my response. Nowhere in my post did I say that I downloaded entire albums or ‘took from everyone’ on the words of the few. Indeed, as you so rightly pointed out, that would be like walking into a store and taking a copy of the shelf, something which I would never do. But I feel your selective quoting failed to take into account the rest of my post.

You didn’t seem to notice that I stated that I more often than not (and I would estimate this is 98% of the time) pick up the CD later when I have money. This is usually only a week or two later. I really don’t see how anyone loses out here.

As for the songs which I don’t end up buying, those would be rare recordings and B sides which actually can’t be bought online and for most fans this is the typical and accepted way of finding such tracks. If I could find these in a store near me, I would be both surprised and overjoyed. What an asset to my collection! Unfortunately, this is rarely if not never possible for me.

Finally, common sense comes into play here. Bands themselves are beginning to exploit this medium of file sharing. Certain songs or indeed entire albums are ‘leaked’ onto the internet as a surefire way to drum up sales. The ‘try before you buy’ method I mentioned. True fans will always want to hold the physical CD in their hands along with the artwork that goes with it. Myself included.

Clarification or justification?? Oh well…Do as your conscience seems fit…teachccd:shrug:

About a year ago one of my favorite artists had a website where you could download his album for free. It had been out already for nine months before he did this. Anyone could download it for free for a span of about four months He sold more copies of his albums after it was available to download for free. I was one of them who bought it when he made it available to download fro free because I thought it was super classy.   👍

It’s all well and good if the artist permits free downloads from his website. Otherwise the norm is if it is illegal it is immoral as well. And unless the artist gives explicit permission it i stealing.

Depends on if the artist cares or not. From Metallica, yes, it’s a sin, because Metallica doesn’t want you to do it. From a band who doesn’t care if you download it, no, it’s not. I don’t know what role the record company plays in all this. I’d presume if the band says it’s OK, the record company says the same, because bands signed to a major label can’t so much as go to the bathroom without their record company’s permission, LOL.

I downloaded a ton a few years ago, and then I stopped in 2005. It turned out that a lot of the songs I’d gotten were on more expensive “rarities” multiple-CD sets or on CDs the artist had made that were only available in another country, so now I have to pay for having downloaded by shelling out a ton of money to get songs I’m now addicted to. Karma came back and bit me for this, it might get you too by doing the same thing.

Thanks all for the reply to my post. But the problem is not solved yet.
Let’s say I’ve accepted that free music download is illegal. Now,determined to stop but with no much money,I searched for cheap(price-wise)and legal download and I discovered some Russian sites, again some people were still like that too is illegal.
To think of it,even in my own country I don’t think there is any legislation to the effect that free music download is illegal and at the same time the amount that most of this cheap sites charged is enough to buy a CD around here.I mean what is there to prove that me buying cheap stuff is illegal.

If the material is copyright then copying it outside of Fair Use standards without permission or compensation to the copyright holder is illegal.

The fact that a site is offering it doesn’t make it any better. Brothels are illegal in a lot of places but they’re still around and it is not their fault if you go inside.

Some nations don’t have copyright laws or don’t enforce them. The Internet allows for things to cross borders.

Most nations however, due to various trade agreements like the WTO or the Berne convention do protect artistic works.
There are 163 nations that are a party to the conventions it shouldn’t be too hard to look your country up
and at the same time the amount that most of this cheap sites charged is enough to buy a CD around here.
Those CDs may be bootleg if they are that cheep
I mean what is there to prove that me buying cheap stuff is illegal.
Digital technology makes good quality copies hard to distinguish from the real thing.

But these sites claim to pay royalty to the artistes just as the other sites claimed.By the way if the artiste are uncomfortable with it I thought they could have sued these sites, how about that?
Also if Russia which is part of the signatories allow such, how can it be called illegal because in that country it is alleged that CDs go for like $3.

Claim being the operative word there. From all I’ve heard, they don’t actually pay any fees.

And they have shut down at least on, allofmp3.com, but going through all the court stuff apparently takes time, especially when you throw in different rules in different countries and such.

I’d thought it’s over on this topic, but no, not yet.
I’ve come across another option of music sharing on the Net,I hope that too is not bad, because it is said in some quarters that it is a legal option. And I hope I’m free to share music with friends also.
And one more thing, would it be illegal if I bought a CD and have it copied to a computer and mobile phone? I just need to know, because this copyright issue has gotten me all confused. 😦
