Is frugality advice realistic?

That is an awesome idea. I always know when I use the last of something, but I’m not so good at remember what is in there if it isn’t one of my ‘go to’ meals/meats.

I might try it and see how it works.
I also tend to plan meals out of the freezer and pantry which helps that stuff get used up. Besides perishables like milk and produce, generally most of what I buy in a week isn’t going to get eaten that week.

Especially since I tend to buy meats in bulk, I also plan my weekly menu based on what I already have in the freezer. Then when, let’s say, the pork chops are gone, it goes on the list of stuff I need.

It helps me use up what is in the freezer. And it also helps me remember what is in there.

Heehee, I have it on my tablet and phone, too, for laziness’ sake. Sometimes I just don’t wanna stand in front of the freezer and stare at the list. 😃

When we got the house the bathtub was chipped and stained. 12 years and I have tried EVERYTHING up to and including filling the tub with bleach, CLR, using paste made from baking soda and on and on.

Since we’re going to eventually sell the house, I’ve been thinking of replacing the tub sooner rather than later. But that would mean breaking a few rows of original tile in excellent shape. Then I thought to pay $300 or therabouts to reglaze the tub.

I saw a sale at Home Depot on Mr Clean Magic Erasers. Bought a few and tried them out. IT WORKED! :extrahappy::dancing::extrahappy:

I didn’t have enough of them to do the whole tub so I had to get more from the Dollar Store (they worked just as well as the name brand), but stains I thought would never come out have come out. Cost was some elbow grease and about $5. Another $15 for the DIY chip repair kit and a few dollars in sand paper and masking tape.

If you have something stained, try the erasers before replacing it or having it reglazed/repainted.

Also, if you have microfiber or microsuede furniture, try a spray bottle of alcohol. First, vacuum and brush the fabric to loosen dirt. Then spray small sections with alcohol til damp. Use a white cloth or a non-natural sponge to wipe. When it dries, use a brush to soften/refluff. This method will clean the fabric without removing the fabric protectant like machine washing does and won’t leave water stains!

I did it on my red couch and love seat as well as my daughters boyfriends very expensive red suede shoes and beige suede work boots. Worked like a charm and so much less expensive than calling in professional cleaners or risking the fabric protection by using the washer.

Course I just had an illustration of the problem with freezing and stockpiling…

Refrigerator/freezer went out. Was running but not cooling. There went a good 50 bucks of food down the drain.

Ouch! That happened to us once. We ended up having a friend store the food for us for a couple days until the new to us freezer was installed and cold.

That has happened to us twice.

Let’s say $100 each time lost, is $200 total lost.

We have been married for almost 24 years. If we have saved $100 a year (I know it is more than that), we are still up $2,200.

Maybe it’s where I’m renting but I’ve had it happen 4 times in two years.

Is it power outages, or the appliances?

If the door stays shut you actually have a bit of time, especially if the freezer is closer to full. When we were growing up we only ever had one power outage that actually required us to throw out a lot of food - it was almost a week. My mom was really bummed because she’d just stocked up on a lot of stuff and then the storm was that night.

We were thrilled because we got to eat ice cream for lunch that day, but I learned that it is indeed possible to eat so much ice cream you get sick.

Of course, if something happens while you’re at work you can’t do anything about it until you come home. 😦 I do keep ice packs and such handy, not for dealing with power outages but for coolers and stuff when we go out, but they would help things stay cold for a while. Or even just keeping a bag of ice in there.

That really stinks. 😦
