Is gambling putting faith in a false god (chance, “lady luck”) or the world, at the cost of our faith in God?

If gambling is consuming one’s life in terms of time and money then yes. Excessive gambling can destroy family relationships and finances-- definately not good when it comes to that level. Like a drug addict, one can easily become addicted to gambling. Perhaps one can be less culpable if it’s a full blown addiction and difficult to abstain.

I went in the other night and lost $10 and left. I don’t think that was a sin. I recently read a post here about a guy who lost $15,000 in a casino one night. Unless he could afford to lose what is half a year’s salary for some, it was very likely sinful.

I posted that thread.

My friend has reached the point in his addiction where only prayer can help.

See the Catechism of the Catholic Church (paragraph 2413) “Games of chance are not in themselves contrary to justice. They become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of others…” It goes on for a couple more sentences, but I hope this answers the query.🙂
