Why can’t popes be wrong about science?
They can under some circumstances (i.e., private opinions).

Why can’t papal declarations be right about issues which may involve science, but also involve Scripture, the fathers, etc.?

I think that geocentrism has about the same position in the scientific community (including Catholics) as the ordination of women has in the Church. There’s not much point discussing them because they are long dead issues, which will not be resurrected.

I will not argue that that appears to be the situation at this time. The only groups who really have an intrest in this are religous, especially Christian, and then especially Catholic.

If the Catholic faith gets re-enlivened (in Europe and US especially), this issue may surface again. I would not consider it dead (clearly I do not).

I also believe that *Galileo was Wrong *will generate a lot of interest in geocentrism.

I like the way this poll is written so I voted that it is definatelly possible because logically the Empirical Sciences cannot disprove anything in an absolute manner. It is possible but improbable.

Without reading all the posts I saw this and noticed the reference to Galileo and I thought I would add a bit of interesting info to the discussion. Most people do not realize that Galileo was not put on trial because he used the heliocentric model because if you read the works of the Jesuits, in particular St. Robert Belermine, they state that they had been using the heliocentric model for many years before Galileo popularized the notion. Rather, the charges against him were primarily two - that he was teaching something to be absolute while using inductive reasoning which is an error and that he was possibly teaching his model as a religion. These were the concerns of the Holy Office at the time and this is why he was brought to trial. This is well documented in the trial records and the corospondence between Galileo, the Pope and Robert Belermine (all of whom were friends).

This may have been a factor in their thinknig, but here is the condemnation of Galileo (from my blog):

*Whereas you, Galileo, son of the late Vincenzo Galilei, Florentine, aged seventy years, were in the year 1615 denounced to this Holy Office for holding as true the false doctrine taught by some that the Sun is the centre of the world and immovable and that the Earth moves, and also with a diurnal motion; for having disciples… …and for replying to the objections from the Holy Scriptures, which from time to time were urged against it, by glossing the said Scriptures according to your own meaning: and whereas there was thereupon produced the copy of a document in the form of a letter, purporting to be written by you to one formerly your disciple, and in this divers propositions are set forth, following the position of Copernicus, which are contrary to the true sense and authority of Holy Scriptures:

The Sacred Tribunal being therefore of intention to proceed against the disorder and mischief thence resulting, which went on increasing to the prejudice of the Sacred Faith, by command of His Highness and of the Most Eminent Lords Cardinals of this supreme and universal Inquisition, the two propositions of the stability of the Sun and the motion of the Earth were by the theological Qualifiers qualified as follows:

The proposition that the Sun is the centre of the world and does not move from its place is absurd and false philosophically and formally heretical, because it is expressly contrary to the Holy Scripture.

The proposition that the Earth is not the centre of the world and immovable but that it moves, and also with a diurnal motion, is equally absurd and false philosophically and theologically considered at least erroneous in faith.

…We say, pronounce, sentence and declare that you, the said Galileo, by reason of the matters adduced in trial, and by you confessed as above, have rendered yourself in the judgement of the Holy Office vehemently suspect of heresy, namely, of having believed and held the doctrine – which is false and contrary to the sacred and divine Scriptures – that the Sun is the centre of the world and does not move from east to west and that the Earth moves and is not the centre of the world;…

Correct, if you read carefully (past archaic language) it is an issue of logical rectitude and religious fidelity. Two very serious issues that cannot be taken lightly.

logial rectitude with regards to methodology and lack of evidence (which has not changed).

Religous fidelity to the inerrancy of Scripture, especially (but not limited) to the interpertation therof by the Fathers.

*24th February 1616: The eleven theologian-qualifiers of the Holy Office meet to consider the theological qualifications proper to be attached to the following propositions:

( i ) The sun is the centre of the universe (“mundi”) and absolutely immobile in local motion.

( ii ) The earth is not the centre of the universe (“mundi”); it is not immobile but turns on itself with a diurnal movement.

All unanimously censure the first proposition as “foolish, absurd in philosophy {i.e. scientifically untenable) and formally heretical on the grounds of expressly contradicting the statements of Holy Scripture in many places according to the proper meaning of the words, the common exposition and the understanding of the Holy Fathers and learned theologians”; the second proposition they unanimously censured as likewise “absurd in philosophy” and theologically “at least erroneous in faith”.

I swore I’d never address Mark again after he called my country a wasteland run by idiots and imbeciles, and our administration a ‘filthy, murderous, liberal pile of garbage’ in the aftermath of the London terrorist bombings
Clearly this has nothing to do with geocentrism, but it is an easy way to smear me.
I didn’t need to smear you Mark, you did that perfectly for yourself.
Dr. Robert Bennet is a PhD as is Gerardus Buow.
Good for them. I see that Bouw (note spelling) teaches Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel at the Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, OH. But who are Bennett (note spelling) and Bouw to you or me?
I agree that I made a couple of errors regarding specfic issues with the CMB and redshift. I also mis-stated a couple of things.
A couple? A COUPLE? Here are some that are egregious and fundamental. You claimed that:
  • the CMB is evidence for a geocentric universe
  • the age of the surface of last scattering was based on red-shift data rather than on features in the CMB anisotropy power spectrum, eg the angular scale of the first peak and trough, and the observed flatness of the universe.
  • you conflated and confused the red shift of cosmic expansion with annual red shift
  • you totally conflated gravitational lensing and the early and late Sachs-Wolfe effect
  • the CMB arises from the edge of a much smaller universe centred on the earth
  • the temperature of a Planck particle is 2.7 degrees Kelvin
  • dark energy is Planck particles with a density 10^93 g/cc
  • you quoted a value for the measured vacuum energy that was, wait for it, 123 orders of magnitude wrong
  • the existence of dark matter was needed by the Big Bang theory
  • the mass of the universe is known to one part in 10^55 (there are key differences between density and masss, and between now and then)
  • Thirring created a geocentric model
  • Thirring proved that the Coriolis and centrifugal forces are attributed to the rotating cosmic masses in the fixed earth case
  • you statement of the Einstein equivalence principle was wrong
The other issue is I think we were talking about two different anisotropies of the CMB at one point (quadrapole vs. 10^-5).
Here we go again. Have you even the faintest idea what the quadrupole (note spelling) moment of the CMB is? I have never specifically discussed the quadrupole moment of the anisotropy in the CMB with you. Saying that the amplitude and the spatial frequency of the CMB temperature anisotropy are ‘different anisotropies’ shows a real desert of basic understanding.

Basically, you’re like Robert Sungenis: neither of you has a sufficient understanding of physics to be remotely credible.
General realtivity does supply the forces that would be necassary to support a geocentric model, regardless of your philosophy of how relativity should be used.
Sighh!!! It’s not a philosophy.GR’s basic postulate is that space is not absolute. You can’t then logically use GR to talk about any-centrism. It’s a logical, not a philosophical point.
You know and I know that if the news ever reported a story that somehow it was confirmed that the earth was stationary
Stationary with respct to what?
Which rebuttal are you referring to? The one where you claim with no support that “There is no tenable cosmological model in which geocentrism can be true.”. Wow, that shakes my faith in geocentrism.
Yes that one. Geocentrism can’t be true in Newtonian mechanics and it’s meaningless in GR. That one.
hecd2 said:
There are many more arguments but you don’t want to hear about inertial frames of reference, the geodesic, the Machian principle, the cosmic microwave background, the peculiar motion of the Milky Way, Planck particles, space-time curvature, the Sachs-Wolfe effect, the Friedmann-Roberston-Walker metric and Minkowski space
Many of those actually support the possibility of geocentrism. Stop trying to intimidate by dropping heavy concepts.

Oh really? Pray tell which ones? And how? Precisely?
I think you will find that relativity is less of a central platform in *Galileo was Wrong *Than it is in my blog.
Oh, I see - geocentrism doesn’t depend on GR after all.
Robert will go into much more detail on observations, etc.
So Bob will demonstrate the truth of geocentrism based on observations. Goodoh, that should be entertaining. Let me guess - quantised redshift, though shown by modern galaxy surveys to be hooey, will play a big part. Bob’s book will be utterly ignored by physicists and cosmologists. The only effect it will have will be to cause people to ridicule Catholics and the Faith. Which is tragic and unnecessary, no?

You talked about speaking from authority, and mentioned your PhD. Gerardus Buow does have a PhD, as does Dr. Bennett (In relativity I believe). You claim to be a “practcing physicist”, but you did not state in what field.
40.png
hecd2:
A couple? A COUPLE? Here are some that are egregious and fundamental. You claimed that:
40.png
hecd2:
  • the CMB is evidence for a geocentric universe
I would say it is neither evidence for or against, in and of itself.
40.png
hecd2:
  • the age of the surface of last scattering was based on red-shift data rather than on features in the CMB anisotropy power spectrum, eg the angular scale of the first peak and trough, and the observed flatness of the universe.
I was under the assumption that redshift was involved in the deconvolution, I may have been wrong.
40.png
hecd2:
  • you conflated and confused the red shift of cosmic expansion with annual red shift
I do understand the difference between the two.
40.png
hecd2:
you totally conflated gravitational lensing and the early and late Sachs-Wolfe effect
I made a general statement about grav. lensing, as a a distant possibility of something, I recall. I have not studied the Sacs-Wolfe effect.
40.png
hecd2:
  • the CMB arises from the edge of a much smaller universe centred on the earth
If the universe is much smaller, this may be so. This is where I thought redshift may have ben used to support the visible edge. This point goes to the point above, already made.
40.png
hecd2:
  • the temperature of a Planck particle is 2.7 degrees Kelvin
We already settled that. I misspoke, and gave you the correct reference regarding an aether composed of Planck particles. You did not accept it, because it was not peer reviewed.
40.png
hecd2:
  • dark energy is Planck particles with a density 10^93 g/cc
Goes to the above point.
40.png
hecd2:
  • you quoted a value for the measured vacuum energy that was, wait for it, 123 orders of magnitude wrong
Not sure what you are talking about.
40.png
hecd2:
  • the existence of dark matter was needed by the Big Bang theory
In order to support the expanding universe , 96% of the matter needs to be “found”. Dark matter and Energy are assumed to be this missing mass.
40.png
hecd2:
  • the mass of the universe is known to one part in 10^55 (there are key differences between density and masss, and between now and then)
This is required for the inflationary phase of the big bang.

Mark

40.png
hecd2:
  • Thirring created a geocentric model
  • Thirring proved that the Coriolis and centrifugal forces are attributed to the rotating cosmic masses in the fixed earth case
Thirring modeled a rotating shell, which can be interpreted as a rotating universe, and was by Physicists such as Max, Born. Thirring did note that forces analogous to the Coriolis ands Centrifigal forces arose in the interior of the shell. You are misrepresenting me.
40.png
hecd2:
  • you statement of the Einstein equivalence principle was wrong
Maybe at some technical level. We both understand that it allows us to choose any reference frame.
40.png
hecd2:
Here we go again. Have you even the faintest idea what the quadrupole (note spelling) moment of the CMB is? I have never specifically discussed the quadrupole moment of the anisotropy in the CMB with you. Saying that the amplitude and the spatial frequency of the CMB temperature anisotropy are ‘different anisotropies’ shows a real desert of basic understanding.
I thought we were confusing the two. Maybe I was. Again, I was talking about what I presumed were red / blue shifted quadrapoles (admittedly I may have been wrong), while you were referring to the temperature anisotropy. I think this is where the confusion came in.
40.png
hecd2:
Basically, you’re like Robert Sungenis: neither of you has a sufficient understanding of physics to be remotely credible.
We have your giant’s shoulders to stand on. Also, the intricate details of the CMB do not really play into what I nor Robert have presented. That was more of a side discussion between you and I.
40.png
hecd2:
Sighh!!! It’s not a philosophy.GR’s basic postulate is that space is not absolute. You can’t then logically use GR to talk about any-centrism. It’s a logical, not a philosophical point.
First of all, logic is philosophy. No one is claiming that space is absolute in GR, you are attributing it to me (and Robert by extension).
40.png
hecd2:
Stationary with respct to what?
The rest of the universe. Just like the case of a fixed earth reference frame.
40.png
hecd2:
Yes that one. Geocentrism can’t be true in Newtonian mechanics and it’s meaningless in GR. That one.
I disagree. Einstein himself says that the difference between helio and geocentrism is meaningless, but if at one point you are looking at one model or the other, you can attribute the forces which result from the particular formulation as the ones that describe the state of the universe under that formulation.
40.png
hecd2:
Oh really? Pray tell which ones? And how? Precisely?
Read my blog. Mnauy are at least neutral to both (all) possible systems.
40.png
hecd2:
Oh, I see - geocentrism doesn’t depend on GR after all.
You jump to conclusions pretty quickly, don’t you.
40.png
hecd2:
So Bob will demonstrate the truth of geocentrism based on observations. Goodoh, that should be entertaining. Alec:

It is clear that your methodology for disproving geocentrism is by attacking the credibility of those who support it. Sounds more like fear than knowledge.

I challenge you to lay out your case, from a scientific viewpoint as to why geocentrism is incorrect, and allow those who wish to comment on it.

Even though Phil Porvaznik is gleefully calling for no more geocentric threads (I don’t think he is criticising string theory 😉 ), no one from the negative view has presented a complete rebuttal.

So rather than attacking credibility, show us your stuff. Lay it out in your own thread, starting from basic concepts. Develop it into a final picture. Allow us to respond.

Science has not demonstrated that the earth moves (rotates or translates) in a manner distinguishable from a counter movement of the universe. The Church has made declarations that the earth does not translate or rotate and the sun does move [around the earth].

Science is strongly of the opinion that the earth does move (though it cannot demonstrate that). The Church at this time is not requiring the faithful to reject modern science’s opinion.

What do you think about the truth of the matter?

Mark,

I’m work space operations. When I launch a spacecraft in the direction that the earth is supposedly rotating, I use less fuel then when when I launch a spacecraft in the opposite direction. Theoretically, this is because the rotation of the earth helps to “boost” my spacecraft and is additive to the thrust of my rocket.

Different frames of reference don’t account for this supposed extra “boost” of the motion of the earth. Is there something in your blogs that discusses this phenomenon?

PS. Nevermind … I saw it in post 34.
