Is Getting a Tattoo a Sin?

When Christ rose from the dead he was recognized by his disciples only after he showed them the nail marks in his hands & feet & Thomas put his finger into the lance wound in his side. Whenever Christ appeared to one of the saints in his adult image they were able to see his crucificion scares.

Here’s something to think about: Our scares and/or tatooes can remain on our resserected bodies for all eternity.

How embarassing it would be to come face to face with The Almighty & have a vulgar tatoo on the body he gave to you. No rocks to hide under in heaven.

littleitaly: Then what do you make of Acts 10:9-19? It seems pretty clear that God declared all foods clean, while Leviticus contridicts that. Furthermore, your response to circumcision doesn’t really answer my objection to your stance. If Leviticus is inviolable, then why do the writtings of Paul say otherwise? Why do the actions of Peter say otherwise? Why does the entire tradition of the Catholic Church say otherwise?

First of all we were not talking of food itself, we are refering to the blood that the food may have within it. Jesus had made it pritty clear that all food is acceptable. But He never once said any changes to that of the blood. I had hope that by quoting out of the Bible on the issue of circumcision you would understand what I ment. Again for those who still abide by the mosaic laws, they will be well accepted by the Holy Spirit. The writings of Paul, Peter, and the Church do not say otherwise. If they did say differently then they would be going against what Jesus had said to the people during His preaching. If you insist that the Laws sent dwon to Moses no longer apply to us, then you are therefore saying that it is ok to be gay, a soothsayer, fortuneteller, for women to defile themselves. all this and mre states not to do in Leviticus. But you say that it is ok. Not trying to be harsh here. just truthful.
 
I think its fair to say that there is no official teaching, but many would say that it is a form of defilement of the temple of the Holy Spirit. I would venture to say that getting one or having one is ok, my deacon has plenty LOL.

Hello tchermie, You are absolutely correct that marking your body is a defilement of the temple of the Holy Spirit. As mentioned in previous posts on this issue you will find the info in the Bible that we are not to mark ourselves. I do hope your deacon is truly repentful for doing so to his body and is guiding the rest of his people in the right direction. Peace to you and good fortune.

Would it be a sin then??? :confused:

I’m sure the Holy Spirit knows of your good intentions on those of you who wish to bring yourselves closer to Him by making such statements on your body. Yet it is still a sin to mark your body for any reason. The Lord says to simply do this, " Pray" . He hears all, and knows in each of our hearts how truly sorry we are for any wrong doing we have done in our lives thru repentence. The Holy Spirit is not one to hold grudges such as many people tend to do. Especially after one has asked for forgiveness. Also, remember that when Jesus was said that to be saved one must eat his body and drink his blood. Many were confused on that but Jesus never once changed His wording. Therefore those that remained confused on that statement, left Him. I ask that you not to be confused over the issue of not marking the body and to keep your heart ever so close to the Lord, as all of us should. God bless and peace to you. note: I have family members that have tattooing on their body, I do not Love them less, We are to be forgiving to each other as well, and to move forward in life, not backwards.

You want to know if it is a sin to get a tattoo. What does your heart tell you? you wouldn’t be asking if you had doubt. We will be all judged at the end, everything we do, say or think will be brought up. God created us perfect, we should not worship any grave images from above (heavens) or below (sea), especially anything man creates.

You know the answer already to this question, Satan will put out there many favorable, things to confuse us. But God has created us with a power so divine, all we need to do is seek him, and go with what we feel inside truly feel inside and know what is right and wrong.
 
Leviticus 19;28

You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the Lord.

Just a question, not just directed towards you becuase others have done it, but why are people taking Lev out of context to argue against one issue?

I mean, if you’re going to listen to Lev for the tatts, then you better stop eating pork, don’t mix milk and beef, don’t go to church if you’re mensturating, don’t sit on a bed if you’re “unclean”.
 
I’ve had my tattoo for almost a year now, and I don’t regret it. It’s a traditional Celtic Cross design. I was given a Celtic Cross necklace as a conformation gift when I was young, later I scanned it and printed a larger copy. I wanted that exact design because it symbolizes my devotion and commitment to my faith in God. I know God doesn’t like tattoos very well but I wanted something permanent to say my promise and oath to God is never changing. I don’t see any harm in religious tattoos, though it’s not a good idea to get anything satanic like pentagrams and whatever else is out there.
 
Please remember that while I believe and have been studying I am certainly not a catholic scholar or authority.

I do not think a tattoo is a sin.

Now that answer could certainly change depending upon your intent and meaning for the tattoo.
 
I couldn’t imagine living with the same furniture or wall paint color or paintings or landscaping or automobile or bed spread or desktop wallpaper or screensaver or front yard plantings for the rest of my life.
 
I had several friends in college who were Coptic Orthodox. They have a long tradition of tattooing a cross on the inside of their wrists, and sometimes even their foreheads, as an irremovable sign of their Christianity in predominately Islamic countries.

Another friend who does healthcare work in Africa has the word “imani” (“faith”, in Swahili) on the inside of her wrist.

Choose wisely, obviously–but religious tattoos especially should remain relevant for one’s entire life.
 
I am so glad to have read all this. I have mentioned that I am very new to the faith but some time ago I had a chi-rho (christogram) tattooed on the back of my neck. i can’t always talk about my faith due to workplace rules but my tattoo is always right there for the world to see…

Having a big I LOVE JESUS on your face isn’t exactly a smart thing to do.

There are a few here who despite logical arguments, and scriptural evidence still quote some archaic OT law which is no longer applicable, and cling on to that as proof, or bring in redundant comments; “God’s work of Art” - um hello, having earrings is also ruining God’s work of art isn’t it? Why stop there, don’t shave, don’t cut your hair, don’t shave your legs (women), don’t do anything! Don’t brush your teeth or use deodorant, heck don’t shower, you don’t want to ruin God’s work of art.

Whilst you’re at it, don’t trim your fingernails?

You may never get a job, your spouse might leave you, and you may even get a bacterial infection and die, but as long as you’re not ruining God’s work of Art you will be saved.

Hopefully my point has been made clear here.

Jesus came into this world to FULFILL the Law and scriptures. If anything, we are even more tightly bound to the Old Testament. Don’t get me wrong, I have two tatts, but I eat kosher. I believe it is important to keep God’s Covenant. I’ve read that some people were saying that it isn’t necessary to circumcise their sons; personally I disagree and here’s why: As Christians (Catholics) we look up to Jesus and how he lived his life. He is the perfect example of what we strive to be. Shouldn’t we also remember how he honored the Sabbath (Shabbat), celebrated Passover and Chanukah, and kept God’s Covenant? Isn’t that the ultimate Christian thing to do? The Pope wears a kippah/yamaka, that’s very Jewish if you ask me. The Catholic Church was created by Jews; it is only right to remember and honor Jewish traditions in order to try and be better Christians.

Perhaps that makes me a Messianic Jew; however, I am baptized and confirmed Catholic. Does that make me a Messianic Catholic? Either way, people will do what they want and ignore what is inconvenient. I’m not trying to be judgmental; as I said, I have tattoos.
 
I my opinion, You can but it doesn’t look good to hang an image of a scorpion in the temple of God and it doesn’t look good to hang an image of a snake in the temple of God. However, you can hang an image of Jesus in the temple of God. Our bodies are temples of God and tattoos are just like hanging images in the temple of God and it depends on the kind of images you hang in the temple of God
