Is Getting a Tattoo a Sin?

Oh, and an interesting tidbit. Many Crusaders used to tattoo the cross onto their hand or arm to show that they wanted a Christian burial if they died in the Holy Land.

I would love to see your tacs of the Virgin & of Jesus. I was thinking of getting similar 1’s.

I noticed some people said it depends on what kind of tat… Well what if I had gotten gang tacs? What if I got purely religious tacs? Would it really make a difference in it being a sin or not? I think if it were a sin, then it wouldn’t matter what you got.
 
I think this verse is pretty clear on what God has said about tattoos!!!

Yes, I agree somewhat, except that we’re not in a post-Christian age at all, just under bombardment by immoral media (using the standards of Judeo-Christianity and Western Civ). I also know Armenians who were tattooed with little crosses when visiting Jerusalem.

Why not just wear designer clothing with cool designs and symbols? Just my opinion; no tats or piercings myself. My mischievous side is tempted to quote some Leviticus :rolleyes:
 
6+ years later, some people don’t seem to realize:
  1. There’s no official Catholic teaching on it
  2. The Leviticus verse no longer applies to us, or anyone else, and if it did, we should all be growing beards too.
  3. They should worry about other issues of moral significance that the Church is bothering with, not whether their 22-year-old daughter is going to hell because she got a tattoo of a pink teddy-bear on her ankle.

Like everything and anything else though, there should be moderation. A tattoo is one thing, but deciding you want to look like a leopard is taking it into an extreme, and you don’t need a specific Bible verse to tell you to be moderate in what you do.

The Leviticus verse never applied to tats, simply cutting oneself as part of a ritual for the dead. In fact, the prophets of Baal did this same ritual in their challenge by Elijah to bring fire down out of heaven.

The 786 Report of the Papal Legates concluded that if one is tattooed out of pagan superstition, “it will not contribute to his salvation any more than does circumcision of the body to the Jew without belief of the heart,” but if one “were to undergo this injury of staining for the sake of God,” he would be rewarded. Good justification-by-faith readers may wince at the implication that tattoos can help you get into heaven, but we can perhaps at least rest easy in the assurance that tattoos are not intrinsically evil.

So if its a Pagan tattoo than i think so, but if it’s a Christian one than no, you get blessings for it.

I admired her artwork and she indicated that she and several of her girl friends all got one during a weekend together. It has now become a source of embarrassment and she was scheduling an appointment with a plastic surgeon to have it removed, no doubt it will be an expensive procedure. If you think it looks cool go for it, but you may want to consider the temporary kind that will wash off in a few days.

That is why you think about it thoroughly before you get it. I got my first one after considering it for 3 years and my second ones after considering it for 2 years… I am about to get my third and fourth one is going to be a wedding band, because my husband can’t wear his ring to work (because of danger of it getting caught on machinery and ripping his finger off) that we thought about for 2 years, and the other I have thought about for 2 years. Make sure it is nothing trendy and really significant.

I have religious tattoos on my feet and I see them as a form of mortification. Going through pain and permanent marking to show my love and devotion for God. Certainly nothing wrong with that.
 
I have several tattoos and I don’t regret any of them. They have deep meaning to me and I think that is what is important. However if you think you’re gonna regret it don’t get one.

I have a tattoo too, a Celtic Trinity Knot, and planning on getting a Celtic Cross, I see it as the same way you do, as a type of my own “scourging at the pillar”, so does the article I sent above says. :getholy:

But if you have like some I guess unholy tattoo like an upside down pentagram or a devil than that’s not cool. :tsktsk:

I don’t think so. Apparently in some parts of the world (e.g., the Balkans, Ethiopia) its often considered a pious tradition to tattoo oneself with Christian symbols (historically it paints a different picture, though).

On the other hand, I dislike the idea of deliberately scarring oneself. So I generally find tattoos distasteful, even if artful.
 
The increase of tattoo in our culture is a sign of the times. We are reverting back to tribal ( paleolythical ) ways. Same way with kinky body piercings.

The Bible tells us that we will know when the end is coming by using our common sence and by reading the signs of the times. Matthew: 24:32-33 ] More specifically it says that we will know the end is coming because it will be* “… as in the times of Noah”* Matthew: 24:37 ]

So… what does that mean…? In the times of Noah, the worlds population was “Savage” and not yet civilized. What is it that all paliolythic tribes have in common…??? Tatoos and kinky body piercings, that’s what. The savages in Borneo had no contact with the savages in South America and likewise the savages in the British Isles had no contact with the ones in Africa but never the less thay all had somethings in common, Tatoos…! and kinky body piercings.

Look around you… 🤷

It also says we shouldn’t wear cloth that has two different kinds of thread and not to plant different types of seed in the same field, that you can’t trim your beard, ect. I feel like people pick and choose verses from Leviticus especially to fit whatever their opinion already is. Not to mention the Catholic Church has no stance on the subject of tattoos.
 
I don’t have any tattoos, but I have a lot of permanent scars on my body. My scars tell a story just as profound as the tattoos that posters have proudly described. My scars are the results of operations to save my life, accidents that changed my life, and the violence that no longer defines my life. They tell the story of my life so far, and I imagine I will get a few more before I die. Although I don’t think I’d ever get a tattoo, I understand those who are happy with what their tattoos represent.
 
Wowzers! I just noticed a TON of people got banned from this thread. :confused:😦

Anyway, as the majority here is saying, NO, it is not a sin to get a tattoo.
