Is Getting a Tattoo a Sin?

I have always wanted a tattoo but have always had moral concerns about it. I feel like if you do it for the right reasons it would be ok.

If you have moral concerns about it, yet a part of you feels it would be ok if it is done for the right reasons, maybe you should take some time to discern the decision. Do you have a spiritual director that can advise you? If not, maybe spend sometime in Adoration. For one it is probably not a good idea listening to all of us because we are all telling you our personal opinions. You need to listen to what God is telling you and in order to do that you need to be still and open your heart.

NO, it is not a sin. I have a few tattoo ideas I would most likely use if I was single. I wouldn’t get a lot of large ones, or in places where they couldn’t be covered, but I do like tattoos. My husband doesn’t like them though, so I’ve never gotten one. I used to have quite a few piercings, but have taken most of them out. I’m in school to be a teacher, so I have to look pretty conservative.

The 786 Report of the Papal Legates concluded that if one is tattooed out of pagan superstition, “it will not contribute to his salvation any more than does circumcision of the body to the Jew without belief of the heart,” but if one “were to undergo this injury of staining for the sake of God,” he would be rewarded. Good justification-by-faith readers may wince at the implication that tattoos can help you get into heaven, but we can perhaps at least rest easy in the assurance that tattoos are not intrinsically evil.

So if its a Pagan tattoo than i think so, but if it’s a Christian one than no, you get blessings for it.

I was surprised to read this fascinating post. I was just reading this thread because I saw something in Ask An Apologist and was curious. It’s interesting to find out that spritual tattooing is not only not a sin, it’s actually a blessing and will be rewarded by God if the tattoo is put on with the right spirit.

I learn something new every day.

Of course, to Jews tattooing is a sin, but then we aren’t Jewish are we, we are Catholics. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and backing it with the Report of the Papal Legates. I really enjoy learning new things about Catholicism.

My thoughts exactly.
Also, I was always taught in Catholic school that tattoos are a form of mutilation and defacement of the body, that we’re created in God’s image and it’s a sin to treat our body like an art project. I’ve always been curious why all my teachers taught us this and why it was echoed by my parents/friends if this wasn’t Catholic teaching. Can anyone explain?

Simple. Cultural bias against tattoos. In my country 300 years ago, it was common for religious teachers (including friars and priests) to regard native Filipinos as being a lower race. That doesn’t mean they were backed by Church Teaching.

My Brother it’s a sin if you make any tattoo to on your body cause the Apostle Paul clearly says in 1Corinthians 6:15 to 17 says.

“15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never!
16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is
one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.
17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.”

It says no such thing.

Tattoos are not immoral. All the arguments that assert that they are fall apart very quickly, as this thread proves.
