I am Catholic, but through various conversations I have come to realize that Catholicism is much more complicated than the level at which I have confessed and practiced for years. My true convictions are in the overlap of the Catholic and Lutheran church.

I feel like the Catholic Church and its threat of me, a current Catholic, loosing my salvation if I leave the Catholic Church for the Lutheran Church is a barrier for me and my relationship and pursuit of God.

If I feel called by an answer to prayers and by my heart for God to leave the Catholic Church, marry in the Lutheran Church, and live a life pursing God in that way, how can the Catholic Church say I will loose my salvation? Isn’t God’s will that I follow him and how a specific church?

Dear X,

You want to leave the Church founded by Jesus Christ to join a church founded by a man—and you ask how this could cost you your salvation?

It sounds like you have become aware of obligations expected of you as a Catholic that you didn’t know about before and you want an easier church.

You don’t mention any desire to leave the Catholic Church because you are in pursuit of the truth and have found more of it somewhere else.

You won’t find the fullness of truth anywhere else.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
