Is God Really Omniscient?

Hi Clem,

I’m confused why it’s hard to imagine that He knows all personal and procedural knowledge? Wouldn’t that naturally be included in omniscience? Why wouldn’t it be?

Perhaps if I can get a better understanding what in particular you’re struggling with I can offer more constructive thoughts.

" Theories of knowledge " are more numerous than flees on a dog. And even if one could hit on one which was true for man, it would not apply to God. What we know about God has been Revealed by Himself and Defined by the Church. Neither of these are bound by human modes of reasoning, nor do they depend on them since God Himself is the source. God has Revealed and the Church teaches infallibly the God knows all actual and possible events and provides for any possible contingency, He knows all our thoughts, words and deeds before they happen and all their effects, He knew each of us before we were born, our years, etc.

Hmm, yeah, I reckon so. I don’t think God necessarily has the knowledges of, say, what it feels like to be a sinner, or what strawberries taste like, if you get my drift! 😉

I remember watching this a while ago: youtube.com/watch?v=xfhIkiT3g8A (though Dr. Craig is not a Catholic). 🙂

Why do you think that God doesn’t know those things? How odd.

In Thomistic thought, which holds God to exist outside of time due to his ability to perceive everything at once, everything which God knows in his mind already exists. Hence, God would know of nothing that was not in existence (or else it would exist), and God would also know everything that was in existence (or else it would not exist), and God would possess this knowledge of what did exist and what did not exist at any point in the history of time.
 
I believe that God even knows the exact path of each raindrop and snowflake that will ever fall on the face of this earth. This is consistent with Jewish Mysticism.

👍 “In Him we live, move and have our being” implies that God knows everything that is knowable. The actions of a non-existent person are beyond the scope of omniscience. In other words, nothing can be known about nothing!

Why would you think God wouldn’t know those things? He made strawberries, He was the one who designed their taste in creation and not only that, don’t forget He came down to this earth and lived as a man for 33yrs , I’m sure He ate a strawberry at least once. 🙂 He knows everything and experienced everything we do because He lived in human flesh. He knows what it feels like to be tired, to be sleepy, hungry, sweating, crying, emotional etc. He experienced all those things as a man. He even had the weight of all of the sins of the world on His shoulders when He died for us on the cross. God knows everything. Period. He knows everything that ever has and ever will exist as well as everything that’s possible that doesn’t come into existence or doesn’t happen. From the smallest microscopic thing to the largest thing. Nothing exists without Him allowing it to exist, so He knows everything. 🙂
