I have asked this before but cannot recall the ideas that I received.

Is God’s name Love?

THANKS!

God is love, like thistle said, it isn’t his name though.
The Name of God is YHWH, and the meaning is not
so clear, though it is relatable to what God had said
to Moses: “Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh (I Am That I Am)”.

Agree…God doe not really have a “name” in the sense of identifying Him…After all, a name is given to distinguish one from another - and since there is no other - why would He need a name?
This is why when Moses asked he was told “I-AM” - - not a name - just I AM WHO AM.

Now were are taught by St john that “God is Love” (1 John 4:7-8) and this is important because when one examines the Gospels one finds Love at the core of it all. Love, Agape, creativity, all that is good and upright, these are the things that are the very essence of God.

Peace
James

This is correct. God’s name is YHWH, but no one is sure of the pronunciation, because Hebrew has no vowels.

Such us why I dare not use the Anglicized or inconclusive voweled version. 😉

Please don’t get too upset.

In St. John’s Gospel Jesus’ name seems to be absolutely important, and seems to be tied directly to salvation.

If we name things because of their essence, would not Jesus’ name be love?

Those who believe in Jesus’ name are saved.

Joshua: God or YWHA is salvation.

God is love and in St. Luke’s Gospel (Good Samaritan’s introduction) one inherits eternal life by love.

One must believe in His name–which is love.

Well, perhaps I am too general or vague.

Or perhaps I am pushing it too far.

Just a thought…

Jim,
The problem with putting “names” to something is that meanings can change, misunderstandings and mispronunciation creep in etc.

For instance you mention - that if one believes in Jesus’ name are saved. But if that is true is it "gee-sus (the English pronunication) or “hay-sus” (the spanish) or Yeshua (hebrew)?

And if the pronunciation doesn’t matter - how much importance is there in believing on the “name” as opposed to what the name represents…
In other words…isn’t what’s in the heart more important than what’s on the lips?
Or to quote Shakespeare - “A rose my any other name would smell as sweet”.

I don’t mean to sound picky - I certainly agree that names, and meanings are important for clear communication. We just have to be careful not to put undo emphasis on the name.

Peace
James

If God was not caused then Existence must be His nature, I Am Who Am. God is Existence
We had no existence. A general understanding of love is to desire a person, and to wish that person well-being. To give us existence is to give us being which makes it possible to experience happiness, in this case, eternal bliss. So to give us existence is the greatest act of Love Since God is pure Spirit containing all being, He is Being, He is Life, He is Truth, He is Beauty, and He is Goodness. It is interesting to note when a man sees a woman it is natural to be attracted by her beauty. this attraction leads to seek the knowledge of that woman. The couple then find pleasure, and goodness in each other. They marry. In their love they beget children (they give existence to another being (human) much like the creative act of God. In God giving us existence was not by attraction, but purely forthcoming from His nature. God is Love. In the Holy Trinity there is an eternal love affair going on. The Father begets the Son, The Son’s love for the Father, and the Father’s love for the Son, begets the Holy Spirit. Much like a Christian marriage. Jesus reveals this to us in Holy Scripture. They need no one, They are self-subsistent. Father glorify Me with the Glory I had with You before the world was made. Our existence is a pure Act of Love. 😉

From* Introduction to Christianity*

P. 90

Chapter 17 of John : Jesus as the revealer of the name of God
** “I HAVE **MADE THY NAME KNOWN”
“I made know to them Thy name, and I will make it known, that the love with which Thou hast loved Me may be in them and I in them.”

This passage from Ratzinger and St. John’s Gospel chapter 17 is what compels me to thing that God’s name is Love.

Of course there are countless other passages.

Ratzinger and St. John’s Gospel chapter 17 is what compels me to thing that God’s name is Love. Of course there are countless other passages.
In the same book, Ratzinger also presents the name of God given to Moses, and presents at least to me, that God resisted somewhat to be brought down to a name. Hence, he said I am who I am. I’ll have to re-read that…I find it interesting.

he says “even though he is truly one God, he cannot be fitted with complete appropriateness into the category ‘one’.” I say that when you name someone you do just that, you command within you reason, to a certain extent, the oneness of the person. But yet, a theologian would be able to bring a synthesis to the issue and the statement St. Paul makes in his letter to the Ephesians, “Above all principality, and power, and virtue, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come.” (Eph 1:21) It is a name, with a distinction of its own.

In Butler’s Lives of the Saints in the section of the memorial in honor of the Holy Name of Jesus, he says that the litany to the Holy Name - is not about his name, but about his person.

It is impressed in me through the Catechism, that the Name of Jesus means “God saves” (CCC 430), he is not only love by name, his name is actual and specific, and in heaven the Church knows that the potential of this earth and those in it will pass away, and what is left is pure actually!

God in metaphysical thought is known as Pure Act. We on the other hand are known as "Potency and Act. Our being is in constant movement, from becoming to becoming. EG. a movement from a conceptus (a fertilized ovum) to a mature man. In God there is no potency. He is , another way of saying it is He is Pure Being, and another way of saying it is “I Am Who Am.” All of the attributes we give to man, are found in God contained in His essence.not as specifics, but as one. So God is called Love, Goodness, Beauty, and Truth. above and beyond He is Existence which gives being to love, goodness, beauty and truth. this revelation was made to Moses. Moses asked God "What is Your Name? .and He answered : I Am Who Am translated I Am Existence. Nothing has existence as its nature, we are GIVEN existence as an attribute To describe man, metaphysicians describe him as act and potency, matter and form, essence and existence. Proving he was created. God has no parts, He is Simple. Beyond the understanding of the human mind. Although we can know something about Him. He made known His love in our creation and our redemption, and His will to share with us His Glory and life. Alleluia, thank you Lord.👍

hi, just a few thoughts -how about the trinity, of three-the approach to ‘love,’ at the moment of prayer might be the best inquiry? to say the name of Jesus -notes a ‘presence…’ so names are important; as i would suggest (my own risk to be criticised) that God is so incomprehansible/demanding of divine justice…so far away even–perhaps it takes the face of Jesus who shows the up close and personal…then fortunately, the name is associated with the embrace of the Holy Spirit…a soul will approach/being drawn to God…i compare this to an idea of love per girl friend of whom connects with the idea of failed relationship/a bit damaged, unfinished, not interchanged-lacking… yet contrasts to love per the divine, as familiar as a balance of man and God in Jesus Christ…consider divine love and remembering the baptism of the Holy Spirit…at the moment of prayer, suddenly, love is defined as much as God has ears to listen and mouth to whisper-the Holy Spirit-some one to relate, paternal love, fraternal love/; prayer, even, might be an exchange of love…so to answer the question-the answer is all in the approach…(to pray) thanks patrick

While NOT God’s name; it certainly is a perfect definition of God’s Job Description

God both Created and Models All “Good.”

God Loves Perfectly and is Perfect Love:thumbsup:.
