Is going to a gynecologist or the equivalent for my boyfriend a sin?
I realize they’re doctors but is it a sin because they’d be seeing and possibly touching down there?

No - that would be taking care of yourself. Not committing a sin.

Just because someone touches parts of your body does not make it sinful - it is the manner and intent of the touching that determines sin. A doctor is not touching you (one would hope) for sexual gratification. They are examining you to determine the health of your body.

BTW - women/girls should see a gynecologist as soon as they are having periods - the fact someone is not having sexual intercourse is irrelevant. A woman’s reproductive health should be a concern as soon as she becomes able to have a child. So go to the doctor and take care of yourself - it is not a sin.

Nope–I don’t believe a doctor’s exam would be sinful as you are caring for your body.

If going makes you feel uncomfortable, then find a female gynecologist. This is what I do. It isn’t that I think that female drs are better then males, it just makes me feel more comfortable to have a female.

For your boyfriend?

Are you saying your boyfriend asked you to go to the gynecologist? If so, was it in response to some symptoms or his desire fr you to get a medical check up? There is no problem with that.

Does he want to be in the exam room with you? Not a good idea.

Are you going to get some form of contraception. Not a good idea.

If you are pregnant, by all means go! But not for an abortion; that would be very bad.

Medical care is important. We must care for our bodies, God only gave us one.

Um - she said “the equivilant” - I presume she means a urologist.

Not anymore than for a man to get tested for a hernia or get a prostate exam. You have to take care of your body and get checkups in every area to make sure nothing is wrong.

Doctors don’t “see” your body in the same manner as your spouse. They are trained to “see” the body in a different way. They are not looking at your body or your private parts for self gratification or for lust. They are not tempted to lust when they see a naked body. For the most part, their years of training to become a physician has made them comfortable to see the naked body in a different way than, say, I would.

In the same way, artists are trained to see the physical body and represent the physical body in a way that they aren’t tempted to sin.

The physical body is not sinful in and of itself. God created it. And He said, “It is good.” Sin starts in our hearts.

Remember, “each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.” James 1:14-15

In no way, shape, or form is going to a gynecologist a sin. If you were going with the intent to get sterilized or something, then yeah, but only because of what you intend to do. Seeing a doctor for purposes of your health is absolutely not sinful.

I don’t understand what you meant by this question. Going to a gynecologist is an important aspect of women’s health, beginning during the teenage years. There is nothing sinful about it.

The part I don’t understand - what does your boyfriend have to do with you going to the gynecologist? Did you mean that your boyfriend is the one who wants you to go to the GYN, and that’s why you’re considering going? If so, then why does he want you to go?

Please clarify.

It’s not a sin for either you to go, to either a urologist or gyn, or for your bf to go to the urologist.
It’s part of taking care of yourselves, and being human.

If it were a sin, due to someone else seeing you naked, then pregnant and laboring mothers would not be able to see a doctor with a clear concience.
Or a women with a breast lump, or cervical cancer or…
You follow me here.

Again, no sin involved.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your responses.
I meant would it be sinful for my boyfriend to go to a Urologist, he didn’t insist on me going to a gynecologist.

OP,

I work as a nurse in a very busy emergency department. Ok, what I’m about to say might offend some people, but I’m touching, poking and shoving tubes in genitalia orifices more then I care to elaborate on everyday in the pursuit of healing people. When I’m assisting a doctor with a pelvic exam or inserting catheters, it is not a sexual anything going on…very far from it!!! Trust me, no doctor (gynecologist or urologist) will be any different! Medical professionals do not look at the human body the same way because of how we deal with it on a daily basis. We see the body as our JOBS, not anything else.
In fact, it seems like sometimes we see past the fact that it is someone’s body we are doing this stuff too because it seems like sometimes doctors and nurses can be a little harsh on their patient’s body sometimes and a little insensitive. But that’s a whole other tangent 🙂

OP, see a gynecologist, for your health and the health of your future children, and ask around for recommendations from friends and family…word of mouth is the way to go to find a good doctor 👍

BG, no it’s not a sin for him to go.
All the above posts to you apply to him as well.
It’s taking care of himself, plain and simple.

I’m also an RN, and I agree. For us, seeing the private parts of a human body are no more of a turn-on than it would be for a mechanic to look under the hood of someone’s car. So go to the doctor if/when you are in need of medical attention, and don’t worry – any male gynecologist with an ounce of sense will have a female nurse or assistant in the room during your exam anyway, for their own protection against false accusations of improper conduct as well as for the patients’ reassurance.

A pelvic exam is rape.

“Discomfort/pain, shame/embarrassment, and/or a feeling of being violated, as a result of penetration of the sexual organs by a person in whom a woman has no sexual interest, achieved through coercion, fear, and/or intimidation.”

agalltyr.wordpress.com/2010/11/28/a-pelvic-exam-is-rape/

and if it isn’t rape, it’s at least a violation of the sacredness of intimacy in a marriage, and if a person isn’t married then it’s still a violation of the sanctity of their body.

I feel sort of the same way about prostate exams and colonoscopies, but I still go every couple of years anyway after being intimidated by my doctor.

You’re nuts.
An exam is called taking care of yourself.
My SIL would likely not be with us today, since she was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer when she was about 17. She had NOT been sexually active - it was caught during a routine exam. Had she not had the exam, she could not have been treated.

I am assuming YOU wrote the article you referenced…you are just plain wrong.

Your blog post is proof of the axiom that one cannot believe everything he or she reads on the Internet. It is lacking in understanding of legal and medical standards.

To the OP – There is nothing wrong with your boyfriend seeking medical attention from a urologist, or with you seeking medical attention from a gynecologist. You are upholding an ancient Catholic principle: caring for the life God gave you.
