Is gossiping a violation of the 9th Commandment

That is not the 9th commandment. That is the 8th commandment.

And, yes, gossip can be an offense against the truth.
 
Gossip is an offense against your fellow man and is sinful.
 
You most likely were reading the Protestant version of the 10 Commandments, which is slightly different from the Catholic version.

In the Protestant version, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor” is the 9th Commandment, and in the Catholic version it is the 8th Commandment.

**Protestant 10 Commandments:**Thou shalt have no other gods before me
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy
Honour thy father and thy mother
Thou shalt not kill
Thou shalt not commit adultery
Thou shalt not steal
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour
Thou shalt not covet
**Catholic 10 Commandments: **Thou shalt not have other gods besides Me
Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain
Remember to keep holy the Lord’s day
Honor thy father and thy mother
Thou shalt not murder
Thou shalt not commit adultery
Thou shalt not steal
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods

Actually your bible wouldn’t have told you because there are actually more than ten imperative statements (14, 16 maybe? can’t remember…) in the Exodus chapter in question. The ways they are grouped up and numbered into 10 are more or less arbitrary as I understand it (compare Jewish, Catholic and Protestant numbering) so don’t feel too bad. 😉

But commandments aside, gossiping is almost always either detraction (if its true) or calumny (if its false) both of which are sinful. I’ve been told by a firend that Padre Pio used to make a huge deal out of detraction because your average person didn’t think twice about it and he knew that most people in the confessional would get to the end of their list of sins and not have mentioned detraction even though they had probably been commiting it all week!

As Catholics, one of the things we’re required to know are the 10 Commandments. 😉

You are correct, the numbering of the commandments is arbitrary. God didn’t assign them numbers. By Jewish reckoning there are 613 commandments…not just 10…and Jesus told us the most important one was to Love God…the second most important is Love Neighbor…and neither of these made the “big 10” christians are so fond of talking about.

Whew! what do you mean “christians are so fond of talking about?”

For the sake of friendly conversation, aren’t you Christian? What Jesus said is the summary of all the law and the prophets. All the commandsments are summarized by love God and love your neighbor as youself.
to the OP question, gossiping is a sin. I know some people who are very disciplined about not gossiping. Our culture, though, loves gossip. Some even say men gossip more than women.
 
Gossiping is clearly a violation of the 8th commandment and in my honest opinion a reason alone for going to confession at once. I regard it as the first step to comming mortal-grave sins. One thing leads to another. It is bad and unhealthy for the soul.

Yes, I’m a Catholic Christian. My point was that we Christians talk about the 10 commandments like that’s all there were. There are 613 Commandments. The Commands to Love God and Love Neighbor are the Greatest and numbered in the 613…all the rest is commentary. In other words,Jesus was not summarizing the law…he gave the HEART of the law upon which all the other 611 Commandments hang. Should we follow the precepts of the 10 commandments? Certainly! But we must also remember that these 10 and all the 613 were given to the Jews, not us gentiles.

I would like to ask you where did you find these er ten commandments from or did you just make them up?
 
And not forgetting of course A New Commandment that Jesus gave which is often written as not so new but Love one another as I haved loved you…

but regardless to whether its number 9 or number 8,

Gossiping.
If you walk into a room and it seemingly goes quiet, how do you feel?

If you are in a room talking about a person and they walk in and you go quiet how do you think they feel?

Bearing false witness and gossiping are different in that could be talking about another person, what they said etc somewhere. That is not false witness. But would you say it about them if they are there? or would you say it about them if you realised it would go back to them that you said xyz?

We all do it from time to time but does it make it right? Gossiping isn’t a commandment in that gossiping does not bear false witness (always). But just because there isn’t a direct commandment about gossip doesn’t mean you shouldn’t strive to do so less. If you have to put yourself in another person shoes for you to undestand how a gossip about you feels then good if it helps you learn not to gossip as much. There is a difference between gossip and properly sharing information on something.
 
Yes, it is a violation of the Commandment about bearing false witness against thy neighbor. Most people have committed this sin at least one time or more in their lives, and probably unaware of the fact it is a sin.
 
The Bible also speaks out against gossip:

*A wicked person listens to deceitful lips;
***a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue. (Proverbs 17:4, NIV)
