Is guessing on quiz cheating?

I took quiz for college awhile ago and on it, was a fill-in-the-blank question that I struggled with. I answered by guessing, according to the grammatical structure of the sentence, is this cheating or lying?

I have gotten highest grades possible on final exams by guessing on multiple choice it’s not I didn’t study it’s that I didn’t retain the information. I don’t think guessing it is any more cheating than getting the right numbers on a bingo card
 
As Katherine wrote, no, it’s not cheating. It’s drawing on previous knowledge to make an informed guess. We do a lot of that kind of thing in our every day lives–we depend on everything we’ve learned when we cross a street, drive a car, clean dishes, talk to others. It’s perfectly natural and perfectly fine, so don’t become scrupulous over such things. Rather than helping you grow in virtue, it’ll make a worrier and a doubter out of you. So, just don’t do it. And if you have any serious doubts about any action you take, ask your confessor and do what he tells you, trusting in the authority of his priesthood and in the God who endowed him with it. 😉
 
No. I mean, some quizzes might penalize wrong answers. But I think that’s passe. Every teacher and professor and proctor I’ve ever had always encourages you to guess when you have exhausted all other options.

If there were a rule or law enacted which stated that you must not answer unless you are not guessing, yes, it would be cheating.

But as it is, quizzes are not a test of your intelligence. They are a test of whether you can correctly identify the right box to check at the right time, using your intelligence and memory, and not using intelligence that is not your own.

As such, you may use any method to choose your answers except using an outside reference to supplement your intelligence or memory.
 
How would it be cheating? You are trying to answer a question, where your knowledge is imperfect. You are not making use of any illicit aid, which would be cheating.

You may guess and get every answer wrong, thus cheating yourself into a zero grade. 😉

Guessing is not cheating.

No. Many professors I’ve had actually encouraged one to guess on questions they did not know since wrong answers were not penalized. Its worth a shot for a few extra points. You are not cheating since you are not using things not permitted during the quiz/exam such a cellphone or formula sheet, or copying answers from a class mate.
