Is guitar mass really a valid form of mass?

I am a Christian interested in Catholic Church and I recently attended a mass for the first time near my college campus. Something I was surprised about is that they used a guitar in some of the hymns and like which made it a little more similar to Protestant services. I heard this is frowned upon, so my question is this: should the priest be allowing this or are they making a mistake?

General Instruction of the Roman Missal:

1. …While the organ is to be accorded pride of place, other wind, stringed, or percussion instruments may be used in liturgical services in the dioceses of the United States of America, according to longstanding local usage, provided they are truly apt for sacred use or can be rendered apt.

Guitars would fall under “stringed” instruments and thus are acceptable at Mass. However, the type of music and how they are incorporated are matters of prudential judgment and taste.
