Is hate a sin?

The Bible says “Love thy neighbor” but is there Hell or Purgatory to pay for not doing so?
 
I am sure we will hear the comments about the opposite of love NOT being hate, but being indifference.

Nonetheless, hate is the overriding emotion of the devil. He hates man. For this reason alone I think we can safely assume that Hate is sinful. I don’t think the devil has any qualities that we want to have. Nor do I think he has any emotions that we want to emulate. Now, to what degree is hate sinful or evil? That will be a pretty interesting discussion.

Now here’s another one. Should we hate the devil? If hate is sinful, than what emotion should we have for the devil.
 
It depends. Hating the New York Yankees is a sure way to get to heaven. In fact, if your a fan-get thee to confession. Rapidly. 😉

I was the one that voted It depends.

One is commanded to hate the sin but love the sinner. It is not wrong to hate and detest sin in one’s life, in fact we are commanded to.

However if we find ourselves hating the sinner, it is time to do what my signature says. Get Thee to Confession. Hating others and self is a self-affliction.

Hating anyone that God has created and Satan falls into this category is a self-affliction. The best thing to do is to commend him to the Hands Of Mercy and Justice.

God cannot hate anything that He has created. [He did not create sin, and he does hate sin.] God is a God of love.

I don’t feel love for the devil but I don’t feel hate for him either.

Yes I think it’s a sin. It breaks the two important Commandments that Jesus talks about… and it can bring a person to hell, if they don’t repent of it. Hatred of God, hatred of neighbour, that is of the devil.

Hatred of sin, that is another matter… but hatred of sin is more like - a rejection of it. Hatred of God or anything that He created, that is a sin.

Some people equate political disagreement as “hate”.

So, until we get a firm definition of “hate”, then we have to firmly abstain. Or vote "present’.

If the object of a person’s hatred is God or man, then yes, it is a sin.

I almost feel like the word “hate” when talking about sin should really be replaced by another one though. I think Hate is an emotion that we are just not to feel. We can remove all tolerance for it, but to hate anything just opens us up to an emotion that I don’t believe is holy.

I believe the same when it says we are to hate anything evil. I think this just means we are not to have any tolerance for it whatsoever, we are to be void of any positive emotion that could be considered with it. But, I just can’t see a Christian “hating” something. I mean truly loathing and detesting it. What an ugly emotion that bears such negative fruit.

I would tend to stay with The Ten Commandments … and not add things that might fall into the transitory category of being Politically Correct.

I’m a die hard Phillies fan, so I actually hate the Mets more than the Yankees. Just don’t get me started about the Braves!
