I am so disappointed right now. I just had a huge blow-out with my husband and now I don’t feel like I can go to communion tomorrow morning. 😦 I feel like it is a mortal sin since I lost my temper and used swear words…and more. I just don’t know why I cannot keep my mouth shut. Now I am going to miss receiving on the most holiest day of the year…

I could be very wrong. but isnt profanity a venial sin? I dont know.

I don’t think yelling and using swear words is a mortal sin, unless you used God’s name in vain—that would be a mortal sin.

Mortal sin requires full knowledge, full consent, and a grave matter. Since we don’t know what happened it is a matter you will have to determine for yourself. Did you know what you were doing was sinful? Were you fully conscious that you were doing it and doing it despite knowing it was sinful? Was it a serious argument in which you tried to cause emotional or physical harm to him?

Go to church early and ask the priest to spare 5 minutes to hear your confession, calling in advance would be even better.

You can feel guilty and still not have committed a mortal sin. Remember, we get absolution for venial sins within the Mass itself. But if you truly believe that your sin was serious enough to keep you from receiving, then maybe next time you want to fight with your husband you will remember the Easter that you couldn’t receive, and you won’t keep the fight going.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

I knew I was sinning by screaming at him but I continued to do so since I was so angry with him. I said things to him that were belittling…so i suppose it was a grave matter?

I have never asked a priest to absolve me of my sins before mass. Is this something that is common? This makes me a bit nervous as I don’t want to seem pushy, especially on Easter.

This is the best idea…👍

I know that others are trying to give you consolation, but I’m afraid I must buck the trend…
Forget the particulars of using swear words etc…The main point is that you describe this as a “Huge Blow Out”…This to me speaks of grave anger to the point of losing a great deal of charity…Enough to cause you to swear…Plus - since you are married - you are, “old enough to know better”. This means that you know that anger is a sin. That takes care of two of the three conditions for Mortal sin…The only one left is “full consent” and I cannot answer that one.

I cannot be any more specific than this since I was not there, I do not know what part your DH played in this matter (it always takes two to :slapfight:), or any other details.
I can say, given your last comment about keeping your mouth shut, that you need to work on restraining your tongue, and your anger.

Peace
James

Thanks James. You are right. Okay, I will attempt to go to my priest before mass…but what should I say?? I am a bit nervous. :o

Oh yes, I’ve done this many times!🙂 I think most priests are pleased to see someone caring enough about not receiving Christ unworthily. Of course, a few rushed-feeling ones might feel otherwise, but the worst that would happen is the priest would say, “I’m sorry; I don’t have time.” I’ve never had that happen though.

Be sure and tell Him you’re going to make it very quick, and you badly want to be able to receive. If he says ok and you begin your confession, list your sins succinctly, for example:

“Bless me Father, for I have sinned. It’s been _____ long since my last confession. My sins are:
I _____
I ______ and
I _______, and that’s all I can remember.”

Or just tell him your sin last night, since it’s the only mortal (you think) sin you know of. You don’t have to explain the details. You can just say, “I lost my temper and belittled my husband.” That’s it! Then he won’t feel worried Mass will be late.😉

I hope this helps!

Well just say - “Bless me father for I have sinned, I lost my temper and had a terrible argument with my husband.”

That should be enough…Unless of course you have other sins to confess…
Just keep it short and to the point. Jesus already knows the details.

Just ask father to hear your confession, “Father I need you to hear my confession.”

What on earth is a blow out?

In this context it would mean a very large argument…complete loss of temper with yelling and cursing etc…

Exactly.

I’m off to church in about an hour, hopefully I can confess so I can receive. Thank you everyone and have a wonderful Easter. 🙂

Father heard my confession! 👍 Thanks everyone for the help.
What a beautiful and blessed Easter this is. (though raining here)

Now - just remember this day and it will help you overcome this sin…

Peace

NO need to wait for a priest. If you believe is Jesus alone for your salvation and repent of your sins, you can take communion.

Its sunny over here, but a bit chilly. I will remember this for sure. :o

Sorry roman roads, but that goes against my religion.

While I appreciate that this advice is given in a charitable spirit, it is poor advice to give to a faithful Catholic about a Catholic issue.
As dailey says, it goes against our faith.

Now - I will say this - If dailey had attempted to have her confession heard but was unable due to the priest being quite busy on an Easter Sunday morning, then I personally, would say it is OK to receive - with the continued intent to get to confession as soon as possible.
But as I say - that is my personal view.

Peace
James
