Is having a spermogram a sin?

Maybe this looks like a strange question. If my husband has a spermogram to check if he is healthy and we can have children is it a sin? I know that in order to do it he has to go alone to a room and masturbate in order to collect it. However this would not be for pleasure or to avoid children or even try to artificially make children. It would be only for medical testing. However masturbation is sin. Can you pklease asnswer.
 
As I understand it, medical clincs allow sperm samples to be collected at home using a perforated condom. This is the way to do it without sin, and doesn’t change the effectiveness of the test.

I would imagine that since this is for a medical procedure it’s a little different than masturbation for the purposes of pleasure.

However, you are probably best to ask your priest.
 
The perforated condom is a good idea, its the Catholic thing to do. Masturbation is intrinsically evil meaning that the act itself by its very nature is evil, the intention does not matter.
 
Masturbation is a sin, and to say it is “just for testing” is not an excuse - he should not be doing that to collect a semen sample. There are perforated condoms that can be used to collect the sample during intercourse that also allow conception to happen, and still collect a sample used for the testing. If your fertility doctor does not know about these then you need to find another doctor, it is a commonly known process.

I resent how easily on this forum people are jumping on the head of doctors. We haven’t looked yet for a fertility doctor, we are married ofr less then a year. I asked this in advance on the forum to know how to deal with this and what to ask our doctor. I don’t recall mentioning a doctor in my question.

I second that resentment. It is amazing how many times the first assumption made is that the doctor is lying to you or trying to undermine your faith. Seriously, some people here portray OBGYN’s as if they are demons trying to lure good Catholics away. Oh and anyone having a hospital birth is going to be tortured and tied to a bed. :rolleyes:

Since we are all throwing resentment around - let’s start with asking a personal question on a public internet forum, and being offended when people have to ASSUME certain things because the whole story is not told. I happen to resent the fact that I offered sound, accurate information, having spent 8 and a half years working in a semen analysis laboratory, and my post just wasn’t warm and fuzzy enough apparently.

Don’t come looking at strangers for information, not giving the whole story, and expecting us to just miraculously have the information about your personal life coded into our DNA. No one said doctors are bad, I simply said if the doctor doesn’t know, find another one. How was I supposed to know there was no doctor involved, ONLY because it was not mentioned?

Now — can we start over and talk about this like grown ups, or are we all going to continue to get our panties in a bunch? It is a real and relevant topic, and there are real and personal questions to be asked and answered. If the OP really does want the answers, then ask them, but be prepared for people to have to fill in the gaps to provide answers, or start asking a lot of very sensitive and personal questions to understand the situation.

I’ve been infertile my entire life - it’s not easy, and the testing is not fun. If you have questions, ask them, but don’t get all upset when you get answers you don’t expect or don’t want to hear.

Intent is a necessary part of making any act a mortal sin. So, at least, your answer is incomplete.

While a trusted priest is the best authority on the act and its sinfulness, in my opinion, if the act is done for the purpose stated, there is no less intrusive means (that are reasonable) of accomplishing the test and the test is necessary (for reasons best kept confidential) it is not a mortal sin.

At the risk of jumping into what will probably devolve into heated, thread-killing argument…I definitely have to third that resentment. It really is shocking how little trust most people on CAF have for doctors, particularly ob/gyns and anyone and anything even remotely related to fertility. :confused: It’s as if every ob/gyn is absolutely clueless about fertility, can do nothing at all to help you, and might even try to intentially harm you.

I think part of it comes from the “go natural” mentality a lot of women have here. Lots of homebirth, extended breastfeeding, organic food, etc. promoters here. Not that any of those are bad things, but the people who support them seem to be more distrustful of the medical establishment because it is distrustful of them in return, I suppose. The other part might be the fact that most ob/gyns support birth control and of course NFP is the only option for Catholics.

Liza, I don’t think you meant to demonize doctors, but since virtually every thread involving medicine (especially as it relates fertility) has posters attacking doctors like they are ignorant villians I think it was easy for people to assume that was your intent.
 
I didn’t see the assumption - all I saw was a big “if”. If your specialist doesn’t know…

My question was only is it a sin or not, it was a question related to faith and not to medical issues. I ask because i don’t know.
BTW what i wrote it is the whole story, there is nothing else to the story. It is just a question. I don’t understadn WHY you have to assume certain things.

As you can see the first person gave me the same advice you did and i was grateful to him.

I just read all the responses you were given and I must say you are out of line. It seems like you are wayyy to sensitive about this subject and taking it out on the other poster…🤷
 
OP… when/if the time comes for a semen analysis…

1)it’s probably obvious, but make sure the punctured condom does not have any spermacide on it… It will not give you a true reading of the health of the sperm. You don’t want them all dead 'cause they’ve been killed.
  1. when talking to the lab I would want to know (as I don’t) how a punctured condom will effect the test. In that, they also measure volume to the best of my knowledge. So if nothing else, I suppose that part of the “result” would also have a larger margin for error???
3)Finally, make sure you have a solid understanding of time frame between collection and drop off at the lab. Seems like 30 minutes was what we were told (I can’t remember). But if the sperm is sitting around too long, again your results are skewed. Consider the time for getting dressed, transfering semen to a cup (necessary???), drive time (need a hotel near by?), waiting in line, or taking a number, or whether or not you just charge right up to the desk.

Hope you have an easy, solvable situation…

Let me add my immature comments here…

I can just imagine hubby and I if we need such a test done:

Lab worker: “Okay you guys, just be sure to have your sample back in the lab within 30 minutes of the act.”

Us: “Yeah sure…hey…you guys gotta bathroom around here?” :D:D:p:p

seriously though, if they have a special cloistered room for guys to jack it, I’d think they’d let a couple go in there for their, ah, “sample” :p:o

This is a great answer. Yes, this is it. I posted here different questions and this is not the first time doctors are called stupid. Maybe in this case the poster didn’t mean it but when i hear “your doctor doesn’t know” i’m starting to get tired.

I was not upset with any answer here except the “if your doctor doesn’t know” in which an imaginary doctor is made stupid.
 
This forum is not what I expected. I came here last year when i decided to become a Catholic to find more answers. There were very few people who gave me real helpful answers. They know who they are and i am grateful to them.
However this forum is a great disappointment for me. Maybe it’s time to say goodbye and use my time for something better.
