People often use words like “going to heaven” and seem to believe that heaven is a place that people “go to” ,but to my awareness when one dies, your mental faculties are no longer active and you don’t reason things and perceive things like we do when alive.
Perception comes from an active (alive) brain.

This would indicate to me that heaven is more a state and not a place and that some people are misguided or “immature” on their views of heaven/afterlife.

Im still not sure though because I think Peter and Revelations in the bible described heaven as having streets lined with gold etc…
This would indicate a place. Was the bible being literal or not literal?

It is both. Heaven is “a place in God,” where we will dwell eternally with our resurrected bodies.

“St. Augustine, St. Anselm, and many other saints do not hesitate to maintain that there are in Heaven real trees, real fruits, and real flowers, indescribably attractive and delightful to the sight, taste, smell, and touch, different from anything we can imagine.”
  • Ven. Rev. Martin von Cochem

Both Jesus and Mary have real bodies. Therefore they must be somewhere we would call a place. I just hope I get to find out… the alternative is ugly.

Yes, what he said.

I trully believe that heaven will have flowers and trees. I hope that somehow there will be animals there. Because I like animals and no, not the animals that died on earth, my dog unfortunately has no soul of an ethernal kind. If that makes sense.

But most of all, I wish I get there.

“In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.”

John 14:2

Yes, I have this book. But I am a bit confused since in the book it seems that the author is saying that we will see our pets in heaven. I thought souls of animals die with their bodies.
I don’t think anyone’s faith should be questioned by the prospect of a child seeing their pet in heaven.

True, the Church teaches that pets do not have immortal souls.
Consider a child in heaven. Would God feel so moved with compassion to allow the child to romp and play with a puppy or kitten?
That doesn’t mean animals live eternally. It means we don’t know the limits of God’s mercy. It means that we need not worry about our pets needing salvation, nor should we elevate them above people, who are made in the image and likeness of God. We all know people who treat animals better than they do people.
The Church does instruct us. Yes.
But IMHO, the whole pets debate is silly.
That is not the scope of this q

I lost my lengthy reply. 😦

Long story short:
Of course pets do not require salvation nor do they live eternally.
But I would certainly consider that a merciful Lord would ***might ***permit a deceased child to play with a kitten or a puppy.

I’m sure God does not want us to elevate animals to the same responsibilities of humans.
But He is all merciful.

I don’t believe it’s something to worry about either way.

Thanks, I really appreaciate what you’ve said.

I love Ecclesiastes 3:21, which says, “Who knows if the human spirit rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?”

There’s lots of various teachings and opinions out there about this topic-religious and not. It’s something we can’t know for sure.

If it were a state, Donald Trump would be campaigning there. 🙂

Seriously, along your line of thinking, we could never experience it. Experience requires a living head.

In Heaven, we will be reinstated as spiritual bodies.

ICXC NIKA!

Blessed Henry Suso (1295 - 1366) Dominican and German mystic

Now, then, ascend thou on high with Me. I will carry thee thither in spirit, and will give thee, after a rude similitude, a distant glimpse into the future. Behold, above the ninth heaven, which is incalculably more than a hundred thousand times larger than the entire earth, there is another heaven which is called Coelum Empyreum, the fiery heaven, so called, not from its being of fire, but from its immeasurably transparent brightness, which is immovable and unchangeable in its nature; and this is the glorious court in which the heavenly hosts dwell, where the morning star with the rest praises Me, and all the children of God rejoice.

There stand, encompassed with inconceivable light, the everlasting thrones, from which the evil spirits were hurled, in which the elect are seated. See how the delightful city shines with beaten gold, how it glitters with costly jewels, inlaid with precious stones, transparent as crystal, reflecting red roses, white lilies, and all living flowers. Now, look on the beautiful heavenly fields themselves. Lo! here all delights of summer, here sunny meads of May, here the very valley of bliss, here the glad moments are seen flitting from joy to joy; here harps and viols, here singing, and leaping, and dancing, hand in hand for ever! here the gratification of every desire, here pleasure without pain in everlasting security!

Now, look how the countless multitude drink to their hearts’ desire at the living fountains of gushing water; look how they feast their eyes on the pure, clear mirror of the revealed Divinity, in which all things are made plain and evident to them. Steal a little nearer, and mark how the sweet queen of the celestial kingdom, whom thou lovest with so much ardour, soars aloft in dignity and joy over the whole celestial host, reclining tenderly on her beloved, encircled with rose-flowers and lilies of the valley. See how her ravishing beauty fills with delight and wonder all the heavenly choirs.

Oh, now behold what will rejoice thy heart and soul, and see how the mother of compassion has turned her compassionate eyes towards thee and all sinners, and how powerfully she appeals to her beloved Son, and intercedes with Him. Now, turn round with the eyes of thy pure understanding, and behold also how the high seraphim and the love-abounding souls of the seraphic choirs blaze up perpetually in Me; how the bright company of the cherubim have a bright infusion and effusion of My eternal inconceivable light, how the high thrones and hosts, the lordships, powers, and dominations, regularly fulfill My beautiful and eternal order in the universality of nature.

Mark, too, how the third host of angelic spirits executes My high messages and decrees in the particular parts of the world; and see, how lovingly, how joyfully, and variously the multitude is marshalled, and what a beautiful sight it is! Turn next thy glance and see how My chosen disciples and best beloved friends sit in repose and honour upon their awful judgment-seats, how the martyrs glitter in their rose-coloured garments, the confessors shine in their vernal beauty, how refulgent the virgins appear in their angelic purity, how all the heavenly host overflows with divine sweetness! Oh, what a company! Oh, what a joyous band!

Blessed, thrice blessed is he who was born to dwell where they dwell! Lo, to this very fatherland I shall carry home from misery and tribulation, arrayed in all the richness of her rich morning gift, My beloved bride in My arms. I shall adorn her interiorly with the beautiful garment of the eternal light of that glory which will exalt her above all her natural powers. She will be clothed exteriorly with the glorified body, which is seven times brighter than the sun’s light, swift, subtle, and to suffering, impassive; then I shall put on her the crown of delight, and on the crown a golden garland.

At the end people whether in heaven or in hell will all be resurrected with a physical body. Each soul will rejoin his resurrected body. After everyone goes through the last judgement, each will go to heaven or hell according to the final judgment. Wouldn’t it be logical to think both heaven and hell are actual places in order to contain so many physical bodies?

Don’t forget that present in God is all of His Creation. If you have Him, you will not have lost the love shown to you by your pets. Where do you think their souls came from in the first place?

We have to be in a state of grace to be eligible for heaven. Hence the existence of purgatory to purge out the impurities and to attain a sanctified state. Remember the wedding guest in the Bible who did not have the proper wedding attire? He was kicked out.

Heaven is a place which requires us to be in a state of grace to occupy it.

It all seems so complicated!

It seems that people, even Saints, vision of heaven is like a Utopia-how the human mind would imagine/wish a place of afterlife to be.
Ie:great beauty,worship of God,harp music,unusual fruit etc…

This sounds like ideals and imaginations.
What I don’t get is,when you die, your brain is brain dead (like no oxygen and glucose fueling the cells etc).
That means your perception and imagination and appreciation of beauty etc is no more.
So,how could a person perceive these things of heaven when the very organ that is used for perception (the brain) is no longer functioning?

Also what about NDE?
Are these real or they rather hallucinations?
Some people state seeing light or even seeing Jesus but other talk of jut experiencing a “nothingness”.

… This sounds like ideals and imaginations.
Something Our Lord said to St. Bridget is relevant here. When he showed her Hell, he told her that what she saw was only a representation of the reality.

The soul makes use of the brain, but it does not require it absolutely.

There are probably some authentic examples, but many seem dubious.

Nothingness is not exactly an experience, so it seems likely that such individuals were not yet called to the Judgement. If a person doubts the judgement, they should read the life of St. Vincent Ferrer!
