I have heard some Orthodox Christians state that hell is not being separated from God but being in God’s presence for eternity and hating it. Do Latin beliefs about hell allow for this understanding as well?

Nope. It’s pretty clearly stated in the Catechism.

Hell is the definitive self-exclusion from the presence of God.

In at least one account from a damned soul, they actually say that this exclusion is a mercy because it hurts them more to be in God’s presence than to suffer the fires of Hell.
1033 We cannot be united with God unless we freely choose to love him. But we cannot love God if we sin gravely against him, against our neighbor or against ourselves: “He who does not love remains in death. Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.” Our Lord warns us that we shall be separated from him if we fail to meet the serious needs of the poor and the little ones who are his brethren. To die in mortal sin without repenting and accepting God’s merciful love means remaining separated from him for ever by our own free choice. This state of definitive self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed is called "hell."
Catechism of the Catholic Church - Hell

God is everywhere…Hell is being in the presence of God and hating it because you rejected Him. It must be awful. I’m Eastern Catholic but I remember being taught that when I went to (Roman) Catholic high school.

@dochawk what do you think? (You’re my go-to source for all things Eastern lol!)

God is omnipresent, so it’s not as if God is not present in some way in Hell. Roman Catholic teaching on the punishments of Hell is that there is a loss (self-exclusion) of communion with God. This is not the same as God’s presence being absolutely removed from them.

It’s one of those things I don’t worry much about, like how God created the world.

In whatever form, Hell would be a radical separation and permanent alienation from God, and there is no variation of that that isn’t horrific . . .
