Is hell really forever?

I’m deeply troubled by the idea that God who is Love can create intelligent sentient beings knowing that most of them would be destined for never-ending torture. It is just too awful to contemplate yet we read in scripture that the way is broad which leads to destruction. The horrors of the German concentration camps pale by comparison yet we hold up the Nazis as being amongst the most heinous and demonic regime ever to have existed. Yet this is what scripture seems to teach!

I just can’t reconcile this teaching with the idea of God as loving, caring Father of all. I’ve been reading some Universalist teachings recently and their conclusions seem so much more palatable based on the idea that all God’s punishments are corrective and that Hell must therefore lead to repentance. I am fearful of departing from the clear teachings of scripture but I feel that I am sinking under the weight of this doctrine and cannot stand the thought of my dearly loved but unrepentant friends suffering horrendous torture forever and ever. Can anything be said to help me to come to terms with this?
