How many time have you hear, “well only Hitler is in hell” or “only those who are mass murderers who kill babies are in hell”. You hear it every time, that everyone is saved no matter what lifestyle they live. True we has humans do not know what state the departed souls are in, except for the saints, but why is that that we always proclaim that person is in heaven if we don’t know?

Feel free to watch today’s Vortex episode.

I have heard repeatedly that we cannot say who may be in Hell. It is not good to dwell on.

Peace,
Ed

This naive idea that only Hitler is in hell reminds me of the time Homer Simpson was telling Bart about “doggie heaven” as he was getting ready to have the family dog put down.

Homer: “I want to tell you about the most wonderful place in the world: Doggie Heaven. In Doggie Heaven, there are mountains of bones, and you can’t turn around without sniffing another dog’s butt! And all the best dogs are there, Old Yeller, and about eight Lassies.”

Bart: “Is there a Doggie Hell?”

Homer: “Well… of course, there couldn’t be a heaven if there weren’t a hell.”

Bart: “Who’s in there?”

Homer: “Oh, uh… Hitler’s dog… and that dog Nixon had, what’s his name, um, Chester…”

Lisa: “Checkers.”

Homer: “Yeah! One of the Lassies is in there, too. The mean one! The one who mauled Timmy!”

I have to say I’ve never heard anyone say anything like ‘only Hitler is in Hell’.

And do we say people are in Heaven? I do know it seems to be a practice of many to proclaim that a recently deceased person is in heaven. Funerals often seem to amount to canonizations.

But this is not right. Other than canonized saints, we don’t know who is in heaven, either.

It’s true but that is not what I am doing, what I am saying is we always hear that no one can say someone is in hell, not even Judas, but why is it that we hear well only realy bad people go to hell, It’s not good to say anyone is in hell, but everytime i hear that hell is not real or eteranl and that eventually God will take you out of hell.

Well I do, just search the forums and you will see who I am talking about. You are right it’s not right to proclaim who is in heaven because we are not God nor can we judge. Only the mother Church can proclaim someone is in heaven other than God and thats by declairing them saints. What one should do is say things like “let us pray that our dearly departed is judged accordingly to our Lord and that he may be found worthy to be in His presence”.
I think Michael brought up very good points in this episode, regardles what you think of him.

The Fewness of the Saved

Enter ye in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there are who go in thereat. How narrow is the gate, and strait is the way that leadeth to life: and few there are that find it!

Matthew 7:13-14

The saved are few.

Many people you might not’ve thought would go, go.

‘For before Pope John, there were many supreme pontiffs who are now in hell. Nevertheless, the just and reasonable judgments that they made in the world are standing and approved in God’s sight.’

The Blessed Virgin Mary, to St. Bridget of Sweden

Santa’s Little Helper? No! :bighanky:

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen that show.

You know who is in Hell?

All people who are Yankee fans! :p:p:p

Given the evils deeds done, and reported daily, by men whom they call psyopaths but also men and women who seem normal but have “dark secrets,” the reach of hell seems pretty long.

It seems that affairs can tend to spiral downwards to the point where there has to be a purification along the lines of Noah and the Ark, Lot escaping Sodom and Gomorrah, etc. to set things right because they’ve gone irretrievably bad enough. So that, those born into such circumstances, simply are not going to fall far enough from the tree, falling on ‘rocky ground’ and the entire slate has to be wiped and started over again.

Of course everybody besides Noah and Lot and a few others thought things were just fine and dandy, and I’m sure, were not contemplating any prospects of punishment.

The fate of people who speak out at such times in warning well, how many people listened to Noah?

Of course God was not going to drown everyone in the entire world except for a few folks. God is too kind to do that, and all those people wouldn’t deserve -that-. Believe me, the number of people who if certain parts of the Bible were not in the Bible, would completely deny they could ever -be- a part of it, is not small.

darn it beat me to it, the first thing i thought of when i read the title was this qoute.

It’s one of the things I tend to think on a good deal to help motivate!

I remember a priest saying it to me… when he said it in his rumbling voice.

Mark Twain was of the opinion that the people most often to be found in Hell were the French, closely followed by most citizens of Chicago. 😃

People’s tendency to canonize their departed half way through the Gospel at the funeral Mass is the product of optimistic love. Granted nanna was a sharp tongued old biddy who boxed gramps ears every Saturday night, but she also baked me cookies and slipped me a quarter when nobody was looking and my allowance ran out - she’s gotta be in heaven!

There is also hidden in the darkest corner of our hearts an optimism that certain people ARE in hell, but it is rude to say so in polite company, my step mother comes to mind.

People’s tendency to keep hell empty accept for Hitler, Stalin and my first grade teacher (a retired marine sargent who knocked me off my chair everyday) is the product of optimistic self-interest. If John Wayne Gacy isn’t in hell, then my odds are good, right?

True, but as I poited out the dangers is that if one proclaimes a dearly departed to be in heaven then we also run the risk of no longer praying for thier soul.

We also run the risk of being disappointed - not because they’re in hell, of course, but because they have some unfinished business… 🙂

“We have the false [Protestant] principle that pretty much everybody is going to Heaven. You don’t have to do anything in particular except make a vague act of faith at some point in your life. But those of us who know, are aware that salvation is difficult. The road is narrow.”

Who remembers Fatima…and in the vision of Hell, souls falling into Hell “like snowflakes”?

God bless.
