Is human love usually selfish? For example, it seems that many people choose what qualities they’d like in a spouse and they think that it’s ok to do this. Is this against the bible?

Sorry if the answer to this question is obvious.
 
As for whether human love is “usually” selfish, you’d have to take a survey. One of the hearts of all people. And since only God can do that, you can’t really positively answer your question.

All sophistry aside, there are forms of human love which are not selfish at all, and in fact, real love is never selfish. If there is selfishness in an action, then it ceases to be love.

Thanks for the reply and link. I think it was wrong of me to to assume that human love is usually selfish.

I’d like to restate my question as: Is it selfish to choose what qualities you’d like in a spouse? Is this against the bible?

I would say it all depends. It depends on what qualities you are looking for. Are you looking for signs of virtue. This would be a good thing to desire?
Are you looking for signs of weakness, that you might exploit? Not such a good thing and probably a sin too.
