Is hypnosis permissible for a Christian? I a thinking of going to a hypnotic therapist for a difficulty I am having. It’s a life long eating habit. Yes, I have prayed, and prayed and prayed for deliverance. I still am in bondage.

I had a hypnotherapy session once. It is okay because the hypnotherapist is a professional providing treatment and will respect your dignity. You will know what is happening, won’t be forced into anything and will remember it.

May God bless and heal you.

It is permissible. Contrary to what you may have seen on TV, when a person is hypnotized they are still totally aware of what is going on, more so in fact, and totally in control including having the choice of being hypnotized. It is also very refreshing. I hope that it helps you with your eating habit.

Good middle of the road response here.

“Healthy skepticism is a good thing”.
“The Church has not officially banned it … it has warned against it.”

There is an extensive entry in the Catholic Encyclopedia
newadvent.org/cathen/07604b.htm
“Hypnotism, therefore, is a dangerous, if not a morally detestable, practice.”

It’s interesting that even the secular world has issues with its admissibility in court.

I understand some people are effected differently. It may seem nothing to some. For a friend, it ruined his father’s life when regression hypnosis convinced my friend’s sister that her father had molested her. My friend told me that the times and places that his sister claimed this occurring, never could have happened because my friend was there as well.

There were many famous court cases in the 80’s and 90’s that were overturned because of similar problems.

For grave reasons, it is licit.

Here’s an EWTN article on it: ewtn.com/library/DOCTRINE/HYPNOTSM.TXT ~ It’s a good short read. 🙂
Hypnosis when practiced ethically is not evil or illicit. Millions of people have been helped both physically and psychologically from the proper use of hypnosis. Even stage hypnosis is a valid form of entertainment. I used hypnosis as a psychotherapist for many years, without any evil results. Contrary to popular belief hypnotic phenomena can be brought about in therapy without any trance, trance induction or relaxation.

Perhaps the best practitioner-teacher of medical and hypnotherapy was Milton H. Ericson

He has been called, by thousands of professionals, the most influential hypnotherapist of our time. Closely related to his therapy was his use of “teaching tales”

Erickson frequently drew upon his own experiences to provide examples of the power of the unconscious mind. He was largely self-taught and a great many of his anecdotal and autobiographical teaching stories were collected by Sidney Rosen in the book*** My Voice Will Go With You. ***
