Is infant baptism effective?

The view I hold on baptism in water it is that it is a public acknowledgement of the rebirth of the soul in the faith of Jesus, that faith given and received from above by grace.

In my mind infant baptism does not accomplish what it sets out to do. It is highly unlikely that an infant remembers being baptized. He/she must learn the significance of water baptism at some future time.

I fear that by baptizing infants we do little if any good, and actually act to counter an intimacy with God.
