Is infant baptism necessary?

I was taking to a friend about what he thought about infant baptism. He said that it should be the persons choice if they want to get baptised and the parents are wrong to force a religion on their child by baptising them as an infant. So I was just wondering if people need to be baptised as an infant or should they be baptised when they are older or does it not matter how old you are?
