Is irresistible grace really irresistible???

Without making me have to read a book or a long drawn out definition, can anyone briefly tell me about this “irresistible grace” concept I have heard? I think it is Calvinist in origin. Does it mean if you are exposed to God’s grace you WILL respond?

If that is the case, there are a few Scripture passages I was wondering how they would fit in.

During my reversion to Catholicism, I experienced what I can only call irresistable grace. I can testify that it is truly irresistable. Once the Holy Spirit convicted me of my sinfulness and began the conversion of my heart, I could not eat or sleep or concentrate on anything until I went to confession and was received back into a state of grace and full communion with Jesus, the Church and the sacraments.

I don’t believe irresistable grace is exclusively a Calvinist concept. Perhaps the Calvinists are merely the ones who like to use that term. The bible teaches of those who are “elect” and the CCC teaches that the elect are those who are predestined for salvation. I believe that God uses irresistable grace to ensure the salvation of the elect for His own purposes.

That is not to presume that I am one of the elect, but I can dare to hope…
