Is is wrong to read Harry Potter?

I think the problem here is not whether or not you should read the book, as there can be different ways at looking at the book. It’s whether or not you trust your priest. If my priest asked me not to read something, whether or not I thought it was harmless, I would heed his advice. If I had a problem of giving up something secular, then I’d have to look inside and say ‘What is it about the Harry Potter books that makes it hard for me not to read them.’ What exactly about them makes them important enough to ignore the advice of someone who we are trusting to lead us and guide us?

Do I think Harry Potter is harmless? Probably. I’ve read several of them myself. But if I needed to give up something in order to draw closer to God or discern my vocation, I’d give it up. For some people it might not be a big deal to give it up, but if it is a big deal… then we have to wonder why it is difficult to do so? As sacred scripture says, all things are permissible, but not all things profitable.

However, we must remember that this is not “Her Priest” but rather a priest friend who was offering an opinion. Not her parish priest or her spiritual adviser, as far as we know.

I talked to a priest friend of mine, and he said he wouldn’t like me to because it draws so many teens into wiccaism (I probably didn’t spell that right, but you know what I mean.). I’m definately not gonna convert any time soon (I’ll die before that happens. I Catholicism!). What do you think?

Harry Potter is not drawing teens to Wicca. There are plenty of other books that are, but Harry Potter is not one of them. Such statements are done out of sheer ignorance.

I think that as long as you know that the magic is not real, and you’re not compelled to seek out such magic or other forms of it, it’s fine. I love the Harry Potter books and movies.

Great answer. I don’t like Harry Potter personally, but my wife reads them. I’m no apologist but this previous post hits it on the head I think. As long ad you understand it’s not real and aren’t looking for it in your life.

What’s the difference between modern Anglicanism* and Wiccanism, again? Is it that the Anglicans worship a “Father-Mother” or “Unisex Parent” who art in Heaven, where the Wiccanists worship a Mother or Goddess who “art in heaven” alone? Or is it that Anglicans just prefer priestesses while whereas Wiccanists don’t allow anything but priestesses at all, like the inverse of the one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church? I can’t seem to find any other differences.

*Not Continuing Anglicanism or Episcopal Orthodoxy, but “mainstream” members of the Anglican Communion.
