Is it a “Christian” sin to knowingly lie about Catholicism?

For example – When non-Catholic “Christians” knowingly perpetuates the false myth that “Catholics worship Mary”; are they committing a sin? Is it a mortal sin? Are any false statements regarding Catholicism or any other religion a violation of the 8th Commandment?

The Eighth Commandment – “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor”

The Ten Commandments, also here.

It depends on their personal culpability. The problem is that most people like this genuinely believe these falsehoods. In such a case, they are not lying, just flat-out wrong.

Speaking (writing) the truth about others beliefs is a good thing. We all should practice speaking truth…Protestant and Catholic.

All too often we “speak off the cuff” about other’s religious beliefs without really seeking out the truth. It happens all to often on this board…with both Protestants and Catholics…so often we speak past one another…refusing to hear what the other is saying…“speaking the truth in love” takes a lot of practice…but it’s well worth it.

Why do they believe this? Because someone is lying to them about the Catholic Church. Maybe not the *exact *person telling them these falsehoods about the Catholic Church, but someone down the line is lying; and we know who the father of lies is. They are passing on lies.

Oh I agree completely. My point is the person who receives bad information, believes it and passes it on is not guilty of the sin of lying.
 
First, Protestants don’t distinguish between mortal and venial sin. I think it would be important as to whether the person knew it was an incorrect statement, especially if where they heard it from was a supposed reliable source. For example, I married a Catholic and she told me a lot of things that I would have believed if I had not known better. Also I would presume most would listen to their minister. It would be a different situation if they continued once they knew the error.

If I, a born again christian, said that catholics worship Mary,fulwell knowing they deny this and say it is not true, and still spread this around then I would not only be lying but be malicious as well.😦

Now, there are doctrines I believe are wrong that catholocism teaches.So, ff I talk about these things and say they are wrong, Im not lying but I am telling what I believe to be wrong.😉

Jimmy is it a sin then to lie about Protestants?? It would have to go both ways correct? If you were to learn from GOD that the reverence you show for Mary was in fact some sort of worship then Protestants wouldn’t be lying. You would in fact be sinning and going against the 1st commandment. Just trying to poke some fun at you brother:)

I know, that you know, that I do not worship Mary…I also know that Jesus will not mind, that I too, love His mother. 👍

But you are not a non-Catholic so you can’t boycot on that basis. You are a fallen away Catholic and therefore are a non-practicing Catholic…

Isn’t “Protestantism” the “boycotting” of Jesus Christ’s, one and only, true Church here on earth, the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church…I think it is. :cool:
