Would it be considered sinful to enter false information when registering for a website, if it is done for the purpose of preserving privacy?

I don’t think it is at all.

Than again, in my mind, I tend to find a lot of loop holes when it comes to sinning. 😉

Providing false information is a lie. And there are no loopholes for that.

A objective sinful lie is one in which someone purposely attempts to deceive or take advantage of another for the sole purpose of personal gain. It is a violation of Justice.

To do what you are asking is certainly not a lie, any more than it is a lie to tell someone that you like their new shirt, even though, deep down, you really don’t. This is not a sin against Justice, it is an act of charity. To put down a false name on an anonymous website is no more sinful than taking a free sample of something in a store and not buying the product. This does not rise to serious matters.

It depends on the website. Entering fake information would only be a lie if you were representing it to be accurate, real information. Read the terms and conditions of the website you are registering on. If the terms require you to agree that you enter accurate info, then it would be a lie for you to do otherwise. If the terms don’t state so, and you aren’t representing that the fake info you’re entering is true, then it’s not a lie.

Well, i’m sure most of the websites require that you provide accurate information.

It depends on the type of site. For example, some gaming sites, forums, and “for fun” sites don’t care. 🙂

Almost all false claim is a lie. Does not matter if you think your lie is for a good cause.

The words attributed to Jesus is clear on it, John 8:44, “Ye are of your father the Devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”

All lie come from a bad feeling. Although some think that, because the consequences of certains lies are not so bad, then it can be done without sin. But it is just a trick of mind. If I believed in Devil I would suggest that, it is his work, as father of lie he is trying to sell his product in a beauty wrapping for you have no trouble in mind by the little sin. But always you need to remember that, the beach is not made by one little pebble. The Devil expect you to fill up his beach

The only false claim is not a lie is when you really believe on what you are saying without knowing that what you are speaking is not truth.

I think it is prudent to protect your private information. The internet can be a dangerous place. It is a useful and beneficial place too, of course. You must protect yourself from identity theft among other things, and from predators. Some of these websites may release personal information, so you should be careful. And that’s what screen names are for!!! Anyone who uses their real, legal name for a screen name is just asking for trouble. About the only thing you shouldn’t lie about is your age, if you are a minor–because some sites are not open to minors.

NO!👍

So here is an example situation for you. You come home from the store with a birthday present for your kid. You don’t want him to find out, so you put it in a nondescript box and as you are placing it in the top of your closet, he walks in and asks you what it is. You say, “Oh, just some old clothes I’m going to get rid of soon.” You provided false information because you didn’t want to ruin your son’s birthday surprise. Is this really a sin? I fail to see how it could be. Also, let us think back to something more serious: the days of the Holocaust under the Nazis. You know your neighbor is harboring Jews in his attic. The gestapo comes to your door and asks if you know anything about fugitive Jews. You say you don’t. Would it truly be sinful to lie to protect the lives of innocents? I think a lie has to be for selfish reasons for it to be sinful, and even then probably a venial sin unless it deals with very serious information. Check your own scripture quote: “When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” I assume this speaks of Satan as the father of lies. If Satan is speaking “of his own” when he lies, then how could somebody lying for reasons such as I specified be sinning? These motivations were definitely not the devil’s, since they come of love for others, of which Satan has none. Just a thought. I’m fairly new to my faith, and don’t know very much about scripture, so that might be completely off.:o
I’m sorry about (not so) briefly hijacking the thread. Really, it’s probably okay if the terms of service don’t specify that info needs to be complete and accurate. But a lot of them do. So check before you list your name as 57684939. 😃

I believe you’re misinterpreting that scripture. The scripture seems to mean that Satan speaks what is natural for him (of his own - since the lies are his children) when he lies. It’s not saying that for a lie to be sin it must have a selfish motivation.

The KJV translator notes says “of his own: or, from his own will or disposition”

NIV says “When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies”

So, would it be a sin to tell your wife that you really like her new blouse, even when you really don’t, to avoid causing unnecessary pain to her? Would it be a sin to tell your child that their performance of Mozart on the piano was “very good,” when, in fact, it wasn’t?

A lie is a deliberate act of the conscious in order to deceive someone for personal gain. I find it very hard to believe that Jesus would hold an attempt at charity against us because we didn’t want to upset our wife or child.

OK, thanks. I still hold my position though, for the same reason as the previous poster: I do not think Jesus holds acts of charity against us.
