Is it a mortal sin just to have uncontrolled lustful thoughts?

What I mean is if you just happen to have a moment where lust is in your mind but then you realize it and say a Hail Mary or something for strength to overcome it; is it still considered a mortal sin?

What you are describing is a temptation, not a sin at all. It becomes sinful when you purposefully dwell upon the thoughts.

No, but it can increase in intensity and weaken resolve. The sin I would think would be in the effort made in ridding it from the mind.

St. John of the Cross treats of this temptation(can’t recall if it was in Assent to Mount Carmel). Although our control of reception is limited, we are not to accept or entertain these thoughts. Prayer is the answer to this, and perhaps Sts. Augustine and Therese de Liseux would be available to help you. Thought substitution helps also. I asked a priest once concerning this, and he said he substitutes the image of the Holy Family in it’s place. The Holy Rosary is always a reliable option.

As @spiderweb said, its not even a sin to begin with, and certainly not mortal. Mortal sin is by definition choosing a life apart from God, so you can’t sin mortally (or sin at all, to begin with) without choosing it. That being said though, you should be careful to avoid the near occasion of sin. It’s interesting to note that, according to Aquinas, Angels and Demons can implant images in our imagination, so don’t forget to ask the help of you gaurdian Angel too!!

I have that problem too, but I believe its not a sin, if you stop it directly, like a cloth on fire, if you stop it directly, no stain would be on the cloth. Right?

Its basically like that, but if you continue it, then that would be a sin.

Unwanted thoughts that are about sin are not sinful. In order to be sinful you have to cooperate with them and it would have to be an act of the will. There is a lot of grey in the area of thoughts. They can be from the imagination, they could be caused by some physical movement (you would not consider diabetes to be a sin) They could be temptations of the devil.
This is why we refer to our situation in this life as the Church Militant, because sometimes it is like a war from within to be pure.

StarMapp - Yes, indeed, Satan keeps attempting to kybosh our resolve to pray and attend to good works, he will engage any ploy to drag us away from that which will help us and others to ascend life’s ‘Carmel’ mountain to our home in Heaven.

Satan knows our history, and it is upon this he so often bases his stratagems - by knowing how he works on ‘you’, so you are also able to fore arm with the help you need to prevent those ‘weak points’ from causing more than just a fleeting spiritual occasion of testing.

There are several great answers. I’d only add that your title makes this easy to see. We are only responsible for what we control. If you have uncontrolled thoughts (this would be thoughts that just come into your mind) then you aren’t responsible. There can’t be a sin in just having the thought let alone a mortal sin. Now, if you start to entertain the thought then that is a sin.

Just try not to act on it, if you present no intention to act upon your lust, you will be safe from the devil.
