I am a 29 year old lady. Well, I promised my dad yesterday that I would do my laundry today. Would it be a mortal sin for me to break that promise and put off doing the laundry until tomorrow?

Mortal sin? No. It’s not grave matter. Does this mean you should actually blow it off? Not necessarily. As a Christian we are called to let our “yes be yes,” and our “no be no.” I wouldn’t think it would be a sin… perhaps an “imperfection.”

I would do it today but I forgot to get quarters for the washer and dryer while at the bank. Not only that but people have been using the laundry room all day now and I have no idea if I’ll get a chance to do my laundry.

Sounds like you are living in an apartment. You’re an adult, you don’t need to make promises to your folks as to when you are going to do routine household chores.

Holly3278, God is not out to get you. Or rather he is. He’s out to get you to Heaven with him. Don’t let your heart be troubled by stuff like that. Even if you were bound by your promise, there were serious reasons for you to not be able to keep that promise.

Just don’t develope a habbit out of it, or you will be in a mortal sin… of sloth.

P.S. And this thread just reminded me that I have to get on my own laundry. 😃

Thanks. Unfortunately I already have a habitual sin of sloth. I am trying to break the habit but it is quite difficult. Being depressed all the time doesn’t help.

I feel that breaking a promise is effectively lying, and lying is a mortal sin. Granted, since the situation is as trivial as laundry and you have somewhat decent reasons for not doing it, it probably wouldn’t count as mortal sin.

Well, I am trying to keep my promise. I am almost finished doing three loads of laundry. I still have more to do though.

Nope. Think perjury where someoen gets life in jail because of your false witness. Think destroying someone’s reputation by spreading lies about them. Remember, mortal sin requires serious matter, not doing the laundry does not qualify.

Well stop listening to the demon yap depressive thoughts into your head. St. Paul said somewhere that we need to change the way we think. You need to start making the demon work to make you depressed, and make him break his back to do it. 😃

I believe breaking a promise is a venial sin and breaking a vow is a mortal sin.
