Is it a mortal sin to miss mass on Sunday?

Is it a mortal sin to miss mass on Sunday? Our parish priest has told my wife that it is worse to go to mass and not recieve communion just because she missed mass. But we were taught you culd not go to mass and receive communion in a state of mortal sin.
 
Hi,

Your priest is very mistaken. It IS a mortal sin to deliberately miss Sunday Mass when one could easlily do so. We owe God that worship as is evidenced in the Ten Commandments.
